Meet The All-New Maserati MC20 Cielo Super Sport Spyder!
The Drop Top Mid-Engined Italian Super Sports Car...
Maserati has officially unveiled its new version of its super sports car: the MC20 Cielo. The word “Cielo” meaning “sky” in Italian, is a fitting name for the newest spyder variant of the MC20. It marks the first open-top vehicle from the Italian marque, since the discontinuation of the GranCabrio in 2020.
As we reported in an earlier post, the Cielo features a state-of-the-art electrochromic (smart glass) window. It can be instantly transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of the button on the infotainment screen, thanks to Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. The top also features best-in-class thermal insulation and is capable of opening and closing in just 12 seconds.
Weighing only 143 lbs. (65 kg) more than the Coupe variant, the Maserati team worked hard on keeping the weight down during the development of the car. Thanks to its carbon-fiber chassis, the Cielo has an outstanding weight-to-power ratio, it also guarantees uncompromising torsional rigidity, offering a combination of extraordinary handling on the road and on the track.
Maserati has also kept the MC20’s beautiful butterfly doors on the Cielo. The butterfly doors not only provide easier access into and out of the vehicle but also allow the car to show off its carbon-fiber monocoque chassis.
The Cielo will offer a number of safety systems including parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and blind-spot monitoring. The new spyder will also offer customers the availability of autonomous emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition, and a new 360-degree camera system.
Customers will also be able to opt for an ultra-premium Sonus-Faber audio system. In the coupe, the system won an Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) award for in-vehicle audio. It was specifically optimized to fit the unique acoustic and positioning needs of the spyder’s cabin, situating the system’s 12-speakers.
A limited-run “Launch Edition” will feature a new tri-coat metallic paint color called Acquamarina, as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customization program. The color interacts with light, revealing itself in a surprising way. The base is a pastel grey inspired by racing, reminiscent of the MC20’s sporty DNA, accompanied by an iridescent aquamarine mica that enlivens the hue and makes it exceptional.
The MC20 Cielo features a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter “Nettuno” V6. It delivers 621 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 730 Nm (or 538 lb.-ft) of torque from 3000 rpm with a specific power output of 207 horsepower/liter. The Nettuno features twin spark plugs per cylinder, a dry-sump, as well as uses both direct and indirect fuel injection systems. The new powerplant is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and powers the rear wheels using a mechanical limited-slip differential.
An electrified version of the MC20 is scheduled to arrive in 2025. The MC20 Cielo will launch sometime in Q3 of 2022.
