Maserati MC20 Breaks Autonomous Speed Record at KSC

AI-Driven Maserati MC20 Reaches An Unprecedented 197 MPH

In a groundbreaking achievement, the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) and Italy’s Politecnico di Milano have set a new world speed record for autonomous vehicles. A specially modified Maserati MC20 Coupe, driven entirely by artificial intelligence, reached an astonishing 197.7 mph (318 km/h) at the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. This speed shatters the previous record of 192.8 mph (310 km/h), set by the IAC’s AV-21 racecar in 2022.

This record-setting run was part of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida, an event known for blending automotive heritage with cutting-edge technology. The AI software controlling the car was developed by the PoliMOVE-MSU team from the Politecnico di Milano’s AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Driving Autonomous) performance division. The car’s stability and precision at such extreme speeds mark a significant advancement in autonomous driving capabilities.

Paul Mitchell, CEO of the Indy Autonomous Challenge, underscored the importance of this accomplishment. “These world speed records go beyond mere demonstrations of speed—they’re about pushing AI-driven software and robotics hardware to their absolute limits. By using a production-based vehicle like the Maserati MC20, we’re accelerating the transition of autonomous racing innovations to real-world highway applications.”

This isn’t the first time the Maserati MC20 has showcased its autonomous prowess. In November 2024, the AI-driven MC20 reached 177 mph (285 km/h) at Piacenza Military Airport in Italy. This latest achievement further cements the MC20’s status as a pioneer in high-speed autonomous mobility.

After the record-breaking run, a second Maserati MC20 Cielo convertible joined the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida convoy. This vehicle had already gained attention during the 2023 1000 Miglia race in Italy, where it covered approximately 60 km in autonomous mode.

Massimo Cicatiello, President of EGA USA, reflected on the synergy between tradition and innovation. “The 1000 Miglia has always been more than a race—it’s a journey through history and a celebration of automotive excellence. Watching a Maserati MC20 powered by AI push the boundaries of performance proves that the future and tradition can coexist beautifully.”

This collaboration between the Indy Autonomous Challenge, Politecnico di Milano, Maserati, and the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida marks a major step forward in autonomous driving development. Beyond setting speed records, this project advances the technology needed for safe, sustainable, and high-performance autonomous mobility.

I’ve seen only three of these but it sounded pretty hot. Looked at one at my local Maserati dealer and the price tag was way, way out of my league. Guess I’ll have to settle for seeing them around and drooling. Not many out there sadly.
