This past week, the Maserati brand posted some photos of its all-new 2022 Maserati MC20 super sports car testing at the Autodromo di Modena Circuit in Italy. It marks the first time that the latest Maserati has been spotted track testing since December when it was caught making laps at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track. The all-new MC20 super sports car will go on sale later this year, so it is no surprise that engineers are dialing the car in, on the track.
The car pictured featured some light developmental camouflage, telling us that the car isn’t finished just yet despite being unveiled. There have been many automakers in the late stages of development that have gone back to tweak certain features before they go into production.
The mid-engined MC20 comes into the lineup ready to take on the likes of Lamborghini, McLaren, and former sibling company Ferrari. The new Italian supercar measures 184-inches long, 77-inches wide, and 48-inches tall, and is bigger than the Lamborghini Huracán and yet weighs 117 lbs. lighter than the raging bull. That means the MC20 only weighs 3,306 lbs. (or 1,500 kg), thanks to a lightweight monocoque construction developed by Maserati and Dallara and lots of carbon fiber.
Power comes from the all-new Maserati-built mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter “Nettuno” (or Neptune) V6. It delivers 630CV (or about 621 horsepower) at 7500rpm and 730 Nm (or 538 lb.-ft) of torque from 3000 rpm with a specific power output of 210CV/liter (or 207 horsepower/liter). The Nettuno features twin spark plugs per cylinder, a dry-sump, as well as uses both direct and indirect fuel injection systems. The new powerplant is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and powers the rear wheels using a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Maserati claims a 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 kp/h) run of 2.9-seconds and a top speed of 201 mph (323 kph) for the gasoline-powered MC20.
Maserati has said that it will not just build a coupe version of the car, but will also introduce a convertible model as well. A battery-electric (BEV) version will also reach production in the need future. Rumors say it will be powered by a tri-motor configuration producing around 700+ horsepower when it hits showrooms sometime in 2023.
All 2022 orders of the MC20 have been spoken for. Rumors have suggested that around 2,000 units will be produced at the Modena factory for the 2022 model year, for global distribution. Maserati has yet to officially announce the actual production numbers, but we have heard that a majority of the vehicles have been sold to customers in the North American marketplace.
