Production Of The Fiat 500, Abarth 595/695, & Lancia Ypsilon To Stop After 2023!

Tychy Plant Gets Ready To Produce Next-Gen Electric SUVs...

As Stellantis continues to move forward with electrification, the automaker is gearing up for the transition from its current internal combustion engine (ICE) lineup to its upcoming electrified models. This includes the company’s Tychy Assembly Plant in Poland, which currently manufactures a trio of A-segment city cars that include the second-generation Fiat 500, Abarth 595/695, and the Lancia Ypsilon.

In recent days, various Italian-based automotive websites have reported that the Tychy plant will end production of its A-segment city cars next year. The plant will undergo a small update in order to produce a series of new all-electric subcompact SUVs for the Alfa Romeo, FIAT, Jeep®, and Lancia brands. The first product scheduled for production is the recently teased all-new Jeep B-SUV, which is rumored to be called the “Jeepster”, which will begin production by the end of the year.

Replacing The Existing Lineup –

As for the replacements of the current A-segment models produced at the facility, FIAT launched its all-electric 500e in March 2000. It was only a matter of time before the new 500e would replace the second-generation model. The 500e offers a number of models including a Hatchback, Cabrio, and a 3+1 model. That model is manufactured at the Mirafiori Assembly Plant in Italy.

In recent weeks, we have seen spy photos of a prototype for the next generation 500-based Abarth. That model will also be all-electric and based on the 500e. Not much is known about any possible propulsion system upgrades, but we expect the all-electric Abarth version to surpass the current 695 in performance. That model will also be built at the Mirafiori facility.

As for the Lancia Ypsilon, currently, the five-door city car is only available in Italy. A much different path than it earlier in its life, being split as a Lancia in some markets and a Chrysler in others. Lancia looks to expand the brand once again, outside of Italy. An all-new version of the Ypsilon will be launched in 2024. It will continue to retain the five-door layout but will be slightly larger according to reports. That model will offer both an all-electric and hybrid ICE options and is expected to be built alongside the Opel Corsa in Spain.

It would be nice to see some of this new EV lineup from Stellantis make its way here. I am not impressed by what is presently offered by the other automakers. There seems to be a choice between overpriced/over-complicated BEVs or some basic electric vehicles filling in the void left back when petro-fueled Pintos and Chevettes exited the market.
