Some vehicles become instant classics, etching themselves into automotive history. Some can be highly anticipated and later fail to meet expectations. The 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser is undoubtedly one such icon. With its distinctive retro styling reminiscent of 1930s hot rods and versatile functionality, the PT Cruiser captured the imagination of drivers when it first debuted. However, build quality and a lack of investment left the PT Cruiser to sour at the end of its ten-year lifecycle.
Recently, one remarkable example of the icon surfaced: a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser with a mere 903 miles on the odometer. This pristine example, finished in Stone White, boasts an intriguing history. Acquired new by its previous owner, it spent years in storage in the state of Washington before finding its way to the seller in 2023.
Under its hood lies a spirited 2.4-liter inline-four engine, delivering 150 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. Mated to a 5-speed Getrag 288 manual transaxle. While the powertrain was lackluster, it did its job. The standard manual-equipped models were by far the sportiest in 2001. However, the PT Cruiser GT would change that in 2004.
As one would expect from a car of its era, this PT Cruiser is generously equipped with features that enhance comfort and convenience. From the sunroof and fog lights to the power-operated windows and locks, every aspect of this vehicle exudes functionality and style. The inclusion of air conditioning, cruise control, and an AM/FM/CD cassette stereo ensures that occupants enjoy a modern driving experience while surrounded by retro charm.
Noteworthy is the attention to detail evident in this PT Cruiser’s maintenance history. Despite a gap in entries between October 2002 and May 2016, the Carfax report indicates a clean record, with no accidents or damage reported.
But while it’s hard to find a PT Cruiser in good shape today, this particular model was sold on the popular automotive auction site BringATrailer.com on March 18th, 2024, for $16,253. That’s pretty good money in terms for a Limited Edition-equipped PT Cruiser. It shows that there are some Mopar collectors out there, looking for iconic Mopars you wouldn’t normally think about.
