SPOTTED: 2022 Jeep® Grand Wagoneer Obsidian (WS):

Dark Side Of The All-New Grand Wagoneer...

While there has been a lot of excitement surrounding the launch of the all-new 2022 Jeep® Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer (WS) models, there has been one vehicle in the lineup that Jeep hasn’t released much information on – the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian.

The Grand Wagoneer Obsidian is for those who dislike the luxury chrome touches and would like their Grand Wagoneer to have a more stealthy and sportier appearance. The package sits right between the Grand Wagoneer Series II and III, and features the same standard content as the Grand Wagoneer Series II, but adds dark features like…

  • 22-Inch Tinted Polished Wheels with Black Inserts
  • Oynx Black Grille and Badging
  • Gloss Black Exterior Mirrors
  • Body-Color Wheel and Door Flares
  • Dark Onyx Chiseled Metal Instrument Panel (I/P) Trim
  • Global Black Instrument Panel and Doors Trim
  • Piano Black Appliques
  • McIntosh 1,375-Watt Premium Audio System

Under the hood, like all Grand Wagoneers, is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque. Using the SRT-based HEMI instead of the “Big Gas Engine” (BGE) unit from the Ram Heavy Duty, the Grand Wagoneer’s 6.4-liter has received some unique enhancements like a unique exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and moving the airbox to the right side of the engine bay. It has also been retuned to deliver a broad torque band to deliver the optimal blend of power and comfort regardless of the load and/or terrain it is conquering.

Combined with a ZF-sourced 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Range Select (ERS also known as Tow/Haul Mode), the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian is capable of a 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in the 6-second range.

Thanks to a standard 3.92 rear axle ratio, the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian can also tow up to 9,850 lbs.

Don’t think that the Obsidian is a pavement princess either. Obsidian’s Quadra-Drive® II 4×4 system opens up the world with legendary capability. Featuring a rear electronic limited-slip differential and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, the automatic 4×4 system offers the power needed to explore most terrain.

Speaking of terrain, Grand Wagoneer’s Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System adjusts shift patterns, engine performance, and torque distribution for maximum traction on tough roads. The active two-speed transfer case automatically shifts between two low-end power options and provides more torque when you need it. Plus, Selec-Speed® control offers outstanding performance while climbing up and downhill, thanks to hill ascent and hill descent control features.

So while it may not feature Jeep’s “Trail Rated” badge on the side of it, the Obsidian still is very capable on- and off-road.

While Jeep has teased us with a few quick shots of the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian in promotion material, we haven’t really seen the darkened themed Grand Wagoneer in person, that is till now. One of our readers happened to spot the ultra-premium SUV on one of the major Detroit-area freeways this past weekend and decided to share the photos with us.

Featured in the Silver Zynith exterior color, this Obsidian model looks much more aggressive than its other counterparts.  The Silver Zynith color is just one of four colors available on the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian, with the other three colors being Baltic Grey, Diamond Black, and Bright White. The Obsidian is also limited to an all-Global Black-colored interior.

There is also not a lot of options to choose from on the Obsidian, as the Grand Wagoneer Series II on which is based is already pretty loaded. The additional options/packages include…

    • Advanced Security Alert System
    • Rear Seat Monitoring Camera

  • Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Group (ABR) –
    • Black Tow-Hooks
    • Heavy-Duty Engine Cooling
    • Removable Rear Tow-Hook
    • Trailer-Brake Control
    • Trailer-Hitch Line-Up Assist
    • Trailer-Hitch Zoom
  • Rear-Seat Entertainment Group (AV1)
    • Amazon Fire TV for Auto

While the Obsidian is not cheap, it is one of the better-looking packages on the all-new Grand Wagoneer.
