Meet The 2021 Fiat 500 3+1 “la Prima” Opening Edition:

FIAT Adds Another Door To The Famed City Car...

Despite the pandemic, the FIAT brand has had a busy year introducing its new electrified Fiat 500 lineup. The introductions started March 4th with the all-new 500 “la Prima” Cabrio, followed by a hatchback version on June 8th. Now, FIAT is ready to show us the latest interoperation of its famed city car, the Fiat 500 3+1 “la Prima” Opening Edition.

When designing the new generation of the 500 city car, the FIAT design team decided to address an issue that faced a lot of the people looking at the last generation of the car – the lack of access to the backseat. So to help the evolution of the 500 customer base, the team responded to those customers who have grown and whose habits have changed – the young person who darted the city streets of their last generation of the 500, but now is a “working Mom or Dad” who struggle to get their one or more kids to school in the morning before heading to work and then to after school activities. This meant adding a third door to the passenger side of the vehicle while keeping its retro-themed styling intact.

The third “small door” opens in the opposite direction (similar to the original 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab opening rear doors), and given the lack of a center panel in the door itself, means you can jump inside the new 500 more comfortably, as well as load and unload large items with ease, and put a child in their car seat in a quicker and more straightforward way. Once you’ve closed the small door, there’s no difference from any other 500. It is still the same style and the same size as the Cabrio and Hatchback models.

The new rear door only adds about 66 lbs (or 30kg) to the small city car with no effect on the 500’s handling or range. When it comes to safety, the rear door can only be opened with the front door already open, to ensure the rear passengers can’t open it by accident.

Just like the Cabrio and Hatchback models, the 500 3+1 is making its debut with a “la Prima” Opening Edition. The “la Prima” Opening Edition adds a unique style, exclusivity, technology, and connectivity when compared to the rest of the lineup.

A new set of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 42 kWh give the 2021 Fiat 500 a range of up to 320 kilometers (or about 200 miles) in the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle. To optimize charging times, the new Fiat 500 is equipped with an 85 kW fast charger system to charge the battery very quickly. For example, it takes only 5 minutes to build up a sufficient energy reserve to travel 50 kilometers (about 31 miles), more than is needed for average daily use. The fast charger can also charge the battery to 80% in just 35 minutes. A Combo 2 socket is located on the rear right-side panel of the car and offers both AC and DC charging.
