Iconic “Black Ghost” Challenger Inspires Unique R/T Scat Pack Recreation

This Design Is More Than Just A Sticker Package...

odge’s 2023 “Last Call” special edition series of Challengers and Chargers has received criticism for being nothing more than “sticker packages”. However, a digital artist by the name of Oscar Vargas (@wb.artist20) has taken inspiration from the original “Black Ghost” 1970 Dodge Challenger HEMI R/T SE and recreated it in his own unique way.

The “Black Ghost” Challenger is notorious in Detroit’s street racing scene, having been recounted and honored for its legend. Officer Godfrey Qualls purchased the car in 1969 with the intention of enjoying both comfort and performance. However, in the summer of 1970, stories began to circulate that a nasty black HEMI Challenger was taking on all comers and disappearing into the night. Qualls was aware that getting caught would not be good for his career, so the car remained a rumor, hence the name “Black Ghost”. The car is considered one of the highest optioned Dodge Challengers ever built, with only 23 HEMI R/T SE examples constructed.

Vargas decided to pay homage to the original “Black Ghost” Challenger by designing his own version, using a Challenger R/T Scat Pack Widebody as the base. He added chrome bumpers, chrome trim mouldings, and even the iconic Gator-grain vinyl top, which looks amazing on the modern-day Challenger. The design is completed with decals in honor of Africa’s feared Zulu warriors on the fender, a true 1970 Dodge Challenger-inspired stripe, and a modern take on the steel wheels with chrome dog dish covers.

While some may criticize the lack of new content in Dodge’s “Last Call” special edition series, Vargas’ recreation of the “Black Ghost” Challenger shows that inspiration from classic cars can still create something unique and exciting.

The original “Black Ghost” Challenger is set to be sold at Mecum Indy in May, giving car enthusiasts the chance to own a piece of history.
