CAUGHT: 2022 Maserati Grecale Gives Us A Sneak Peek Of Its Interior:

New Midsized Luxury SUV To Debut Later This Year...

The Maserati brand is currently in the middle of a renaissance or rebirth, as the famed Italian marque continues to revamp its lineup. While the brand continues to improve its trio of standard vehicles (Levante, Quattroporte, and Ghibli), Maserati introducing new products like the MC20 super sportscar and the GranTurismo sports tourer. But one vehicle is focused on bringing more people into the brand and that vehicle is the new Grecale SUV.

Named after a Mediterranean wind, the Grecale is the brand’s first entry into the midsized SUV market. Based on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the all-new Grecale slots just below the popular Levante SUV.

Our friends at GabetzSPYUnit happened to run into a few various Grecale prototypes out doing some validation testing on public roads. These latest photos are perhaps our best look yet of the newest Maserati, which looks to adopt a lot of key design elements from the new MC20 super sports car (especially when it comes to the headlight and front grille design). Massive air intakes surround the new Maserati grille, which gives the Grecale a more aggressive front appearance.

On the back of the vehicle, we can see the “boomerang” styled taillamps like those found on the Levante, Ghibli, and Quattroporte. There is also a quad rear-exiting exhaust hanging under the lower rear fascia, something we have grown accustomed to seeing on the upper-level Levante models.

We are also getting our first look at the vehicle’s interior thanks to this latest series of shots. If you look closely enough, you will be able to see the new three-spoke design steering wheel. Behind that wheel are prominent paddle shifters like on other Maserati models. We can also see the reflections from the new digital instrument cluster, something Stellantis is slowly updating across all of its vehicle lineups.

A shot of the passenger side door open, allows us to see what appears to be a rectangular climate vent. With most of the dash and the interior of the doors covered with camouflage, it is hard to tell much more details from the interior. We expect Grecale will get the new 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has been reaching much of the FCA side of the Stellantis brands. This includes the Maserati form of the new Uconnect 5 infotainment software.

As we pointed out in an earlier post, one thing that stands out to us is the door handles. The handles are the same as those found on the all-new electrified Fiat 500 city car. The flush electric door handles feature an e-latch system. All you have to do is press the button inside the handle to unlock the vehicle and pop the door open.

Under the hood, we expect to see the turbocharged 2.0-liter GME-T4 inline four-cylinder engine. We believe that the 2.0-liter will come standard with the Levante Hybrid’s mild-hybrid system. Power should be identical with 330 horsepower and torque of 450 Nm (332 ft.-lb) delivered from just 1,500 rpm and paired with a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission.

Maserati will also be bringing an all-electric powertrain to the Grecale as well. While we don’t know specifics, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Grecale battery-electric (BEV) offering will be faster than the 505 horsepower Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6.

The Grecale will be assembled at the recently updated Cassino Assembly Plant in Italy. The plant received a €800 million in preparation for the launch of the new midsized SUV. The Grecale should make its official debut by the end of this year. The license plate on Maserati teasers for the Grecale has had “MMXXI” written on it, symbolizing that we might see another unveiling event similar to the MMXX event last year

Not much to see here, but I hope Maserati is going in the right direction with this small crossover. I for one am not too impressed with what I can see and I fear this may be a drag on the Maserati brand if it fails to deliver a luxury experience in all aspects of the segment it is targeting. I’m not sure this vehicle is needed in the lineup since I am of the mind that the GT models coming soon, the MC20 and a seriously updated Ghibili, Levante and Quattroporte are all the brand needs, that and more marketing and dealerships. I’d have left the small crossover to Alfa Romeo, a brand truly having an identity crisis and lack of product. This one just leaves me flat.
