Stellantis Expands Existing Hydrogen Fuel Cell For Its Vans

European Mid-size and Full-size Vans Will Both Offer Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology...

Stellantis, who is the leader in commercial vehicles in Europe, is ramping up its game in the zero-emission arena with expanded production capabilities for hydrogen fuel cell vans. These vans are part of the Stellantis Pro One lineup and are now being manufactured in-house at facilities in Hordain, France, and Gliwice, Poland. This move is a significant boost to the company’s efforts to offer more eco-friendly transportation options.

The Pro One strategic initiative, announced in October 2023, marked a major overhaul of Stellantis’ van lineup. The focus is on integrating advanced electrified propulsion, safety features, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and connectivity technologies to create a hassle-free experience for drivers and a reliable solution for commercial owners.

Stellantis’ manufacturing footprint across Europe includes sites in Portugal, Spain, the UK, France, Italy, and Poland, each specializing in different types of vans. With the addition of hydrogen fuel cell vans, Stellantis is aiming to reinforce its position as a leader in zero-emission commercial vehicles on the continent.

“The action to bring hydrogen fuel cell midsize vans and add fuel cell large vans to our production lines is a proof point of our commitment to maintain the lead in cutting-edge hydrogen technology and make it available to our most demanding customers,” said Jean-Michel Billig, Stellantis Chief Technology Officer, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Development. “The skills and dedication of our engineering and operational teams are essential as we pursue the ambitions of Dare Forward 2030 and maintain the lead in the zero-emission commercial vehicle segment.”

The new fuel cell vans boast impressive performance metrics. The mid-size vans offer a record range of up to 400 km (249 miles) and refuel in under four minutes, thanks to a second-generation fuel cell system. Meanwhile, the large vans can travel up to 500 km (311 miles) on a single charge and refuel in just five minutes, making them suitable for demanding commercial applications.

Stellantis’ in-house production covers eight models across its brands: Citroën ë-Jumpy and ë-Jumper, Fiat Professional E-Scudo and E-Ducato, Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano, and Peugeot E-Expert and E-Boxer. These vans build on the success of Stellantis’ earlier zero-emission vehicles and demonstrate the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly transportation.

It will will be coming to America for the Ram ProMaster as well. Some areas of the US with available thermal energy could greatly benefit from this hydrogen fuel cell technology, the state of Hawaii comes to mind. The small country of Iceland has combined thermal energy with hydrogen fuel cell technology to great advantage. It is not a panacea, but neither is battery electric power for everything on wheels. The US has now become a laughing stock as we fall behind with thermal energy, when we slavishly choose those technologies and policies benefiting our adversaries.
