With just weeks to go until its official debut in Europe, we’re getting our clearest look yet at the all-new 2026 Jeep® Compass (J4U). Spotted testing in Italy, this prototype appears to be the upcoming all-electric Compass Limited 4xe—and it’s bringing a bold new direction for the C-segment SUV.

The camouflaged prototype still hides many styling cues, but there’s no mistaking this for anything other than a Jeep. Even under wrap, the trademark seven-slot grille design is visible—though it’s sealed off, as this model doesn’t need it for airflow. All cooling duties have moved to a sleek lower intake with active shutters, which appear to be closed in these rainy spy shots, likely to enhance aerodynamics while coasting through the Melfi countryside.
This latest Compass rides on Stellantis’ new STLA Medium architecture—a modular EV-first platform also underpinning the new Peugeot 5008 and Opel Grandland. Unlike previous Compass models, this one will offer multiple powertrain options globally, from traditional gas-powered engines with mild-hybrid tech to full battery-electric setups.

What we’re looking at here appears to be the battery-powered 4xe variant. Based on what we’ve learned, it’s expected to carry a sizable 98 kWh battery pack, which could deliver up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) of estimated range on the EPA cycle. That would put it right in the thick of the EV crossover competition.
The Compass retains its signature short overhangs and trapezoidal wheel arches, which should help with off-road clearance—something Jeep fans will expect, even in an EV. And while this one’s fully electric, Jeep plans to launch front-wheel-drive e-HYBRID and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models in Europe too. North American versions are still in the works, with Jeep pausing final development to reassess powertrain options better suited for U.S. and Canadian buyers. That could mean more powerful engines, longer ranges, or even new hybrid tech altogether.

Under the hood—if you’re buying one that has a hood engine—the global Compass lineup will reportedly offer a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder gas engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. That powertrain won’t come stateside, but it’ll help cover markets that aren’t ready to go full-electric.
Jeep plans to officially unveil the new Compass on May 6th, with sales beginning later this year in Europe. The North American debut is set for early 2026, giving Jeep time to revamp its powertrain strategy as regulations have been pushed back and EV sales have been stagnant in North America. For the European market, the Compass will be manufactured at the Melfi Assembly Plant, where Stellantis has consolidated several global compact vehicle programs.
