Bridgewater Interiors, a seat supplier for Stellantis, plans to lay off 63 employees at its Detroit plant. This decision comes after Stellantis announced it would discontinue the Ram 1500 Classic after the 2024 model year. According to a WARN notice filed with the state on Monday, the layoffs are expected to be permanent and take effect by the end of September.
As stated in the filing, the affected employees, represented by UAW Local 600, will be paid their earned wages and fringe benefits upon termination.
Ram CEO Chris Feuell confirmed that production of the Ram 1500 Classic will end. The fourth-generation half-ton has been on the market since 2009. The decision to discontinue this model marks a significant shift for the brand, as the Ram 1500 Classic has been a budget-friendly option for those looking to get into a full-size pickup.
“The Ram 1500 Classic has been a great entry-point pickup for Ram, and the Tradesman model has certainly represented the needs of our commercial truck customers,” said Stellantis spokeswoman Jodi Tinson in an e-mail to Automotive News.
The Ram 1500 Classic is produced at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, which also manufactures the Jeep® Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer (WS) full-size SUVs. In a related move, Stellantis announced last month that it would temporarily lay off 1,600 workers at Warren Truck to align production with sales.
