Stellantis Sells Its Mopar Center Line, Michigan Facility
"Home of Mopar" Changes Ownership, Operations Continue...
Stellantis has sold its massive 1.2 million-square-foot Mopar complex in Center Line, Michigan, signaling a major shift in the automaker’s parts distribution strategy. Once celebrated as the “world headquarters” of Mopar, the site is set for redevelopment under its new owners, New York-based Ashley Capital and Hazel Park, Michigan-based CSC Capital.
The automaker will temporarily maintain operations at the facility under a sale-leaseback agreement. Approximately 500 United Auto Workers (UAW)-represented employees currently work at the complex near I-696 and Mound Road. Operations are expected to continue until at least April 2027, with the possibility of extending until 2029, according to Center Line City Manager Dennis Champine.
A New Chapter for Mopar –
The sale aligns with Stellantis’ broader plans to centralize and modernize Mopar operations in the Midwest. As part of the 2023 UAW collective bargaining agreement, Stellantis committed to building a $30 million “mega-hub” scheduled to open in 2026. While the company has not confirmed a location, reports suggest a former golf course and farmland near the old Ford Romeo Engine Plant in Washington Township could be a strong contender.
“The future site will feature state-of-the-art technology and innovation, providing a safe, modern, and environmentally friendly workspace,” Stellantis spokeswoman Jodi Tinson explained. “This facility will align with our Dare Forward objectives, striving for operational carbon neutrality.”
Redevelopment Plans for Center Line –
The aging Mopar complex, which spans 80 acres, will eventually be demolished to make way for new industrial development. While the purchase price remains undisclosed, the deal officially closed in late 2024. Champine expressed optimism about the site’s future potential.
“This transition is bittersweet for our community,” Champine said. “While it’s tough to see Mopar leave, the planned redevelopment could significantly boost tax revenue and economic activity for the city.”
Ashley Capital has a strong track record of transforming industrial properties into modern logistics hubs. The firm is also leading the redevelopment of Flint’s Buick City, another iconic automotive site.
Mopar’s Long History in Center Line –
Established in 1953, the Mopar complex has been a vital part of Center Line’s identity and economy for more than 70 years. Officially named the “Home of Mopar” in 2012, the facility housed more than 1,000 employees at its peak. Over time, the site transitioned to focus on warehouse and packaging operations, with administrative functions moving to Stellantis’ Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills.
The facility played a central role in the 2023 UAW negotiations, resulting in significant gains for workers, including a 76% pay increase and the elimination of tiered wages.
Despite the closure, Champine praised Mopar’s longstanding contributions to the community, including sponsorship of the city’s Independence Festival.
Looking Ahead –
Stellantis is also consolidating other parts distribution centers in Marysville, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, following a similar sale-leaseback strategy. These moves reflect the company’s efforts to modernize its supply chain and streamline operations.
As Mopar transitions to its next chapter, Center Line prepares to embrace redevelopment and new opportunities. “This site holds immense potential, and we are confident Ashley Capital will deliver a transformative project for the region,” Champine concluded.
