Stellantis Faces Another Production Halt at Italy’s Mirafiori Plant
Electric Fiat 500e Production Paused Amid Supply Issues...
Stellantis is set to pause production once again at its historic Mirafiori Assembly Plant in Turin, Italy, in December, according to a trade union source. The facility, which manufactures the electric Fiat 500e, Maserati GranTurismo, and GranCabrio, has faced market and supply chain challenges in recent months.
After suspending production from mid-September to early November due to weak demand, Stellantis resumed operations this week, albeit at a reduced pace. According to Reuters, the Fiat 500e assembly line currently produces about 170 vehicles daily, but sources indicate the plant will pause operations for the entire month of December, with plans to reopen in early January.
The December stoppage reportedly stems from ongoing supply issues. Reuters noted that Stellantis had aimed to fulfill three months’ worth of Fiat 500e orders in November alone, yet challenges in securing essential components have hindered the company’s production goals.
“This is a rumor that has no official confirmation,” a Stellantis spokesperson told Reuters. “The company will verify in the coming weeks the production schedules for December.”
The Turin head of the FIM-Cisl union, Rocco Cutri, stated, “We have no certainties, but we expect Mirafiori workers to be furloughed again at the end of November for at least two to three weeks,” confirming widespread anticipation among workers of another break in production.
Mirafiori, a key industrial hub with deep ties to Fiat’s history, now operates at reduced capacity. With a challenging market for the electric Fiat 500e and Maserati models, Stellantis has grappled with maintaining consistent production. Although the automaker has not officially announced the December shutdown, the situation at Mirafiori reflects broader challenges in the industry as manufacturers respond to shifting demand and component shortages.
