If you’re a fan of vintage 4×4 trucks, this 1979 Plymouth Trailduster Sport is a must-see at Mecum Kissimmee on Wednesday, January 15. Restored to show-quality standards by JCJ Customs in Fort Worth, Texas, this Trailduster has undergone an impressive frame-off rotisserie restoration using new-old-stock (NOS) parts wherever possible.
Starting with an original Southwestern truck, the body was stripped to bare metal and treated to a flawless two-stage base/clear paint job in Sandox. The frame was powder-coated by Quality Powdercoating in Carrollton, Texas, ensuring durability and a pristine finish.
Under the hood, you’ll find a date code-correct 1971 Plymouth 5.6-liter (340 cubic-inch) V8 engine, rebuilt to perfection by Wayne Calvert’s Precision Engines. Dyno-tested at 329 horsepower, the engine features upgrades like Mancini Racing adjustable roller rockers, a forged crankshaft, a new camshaft, pistons, and valves. Additional performance enhancements include an Edelbrock intake manifold, a Holley Street Avenger carburetor, Hedman ceramic-coated headers, and a custom exhaust with Turbo Thrush mufflers.
The 4×4 drivetrain is just as impressive. It includes a Mile Marker part-time 4WD kit, a rebuilt Dana 44 front axle with locking hubs, and a Chrysler 9 1/4 rear axle with new limited-slip gearing. The factory NP203 transfer case remains intact, while front disc brakes retain their original calipers for authenticity.
Inside, luxury meets craftsmanship with Buckskin Ultraleather upholstery and door panels by Clink’s Custom Auto Upholstery. A matching Soft Topper convertible top adds versatility, and the cabin stays cool with a Classic Auto Air system installed by Injected Customs.
The details on this Trailduster Sport set it apart. The restoration even served as a benchmark for reproducing factory wiring harnesses for future Trailduster, Power Wagon, and Ramcharger projects, with work done by Narragansett Reproductions. Period-correct touches include NOS quad headlight grilles, bezels, and tail lights, as well as a rare sport rear bumper.
Rolling on factory-look wheels by Method Race Wheels and ready to turn heads, this Trailduster is more than a collector’s piece—it’s a masterpiece. Extensive receipts, the original owner’s manual, and a brochure accompany the truck, providing a full history of its transformation.
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, January 15, and don’t miss this opportunity to own a beautifully restored 1979 Plymouth Trailduster Sport 4×4 at Mecum Kissimmee.
