Report: Wagoneer And Grand Wagoneer PHEV Coming As 2026 Model Year Vehicles

Drive System Is Expected To Mimic Ram 1500 Ramcharger

Jeep is expanding its electric vehicle lineup. Recently, it teased the Jeep Wagoneer S, which will be fully revealed on May 30th. Antonio Filosa, Jeep’s CEO, also confirmed that the Gladiator 4XE will be released in 2025. Now, sources within Stellantis have disclosed to us that the next electrified models will be the full-sized body-on-frame Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

Initially teased in a Jeep 4XE day video back in September of 2022, Jim Morrison (Then Head of Jeep®, Now Head of Jeep® Performance Parts) mentions that the Grand Wagoneer 4XE has an estimated driving range of over 500 miles with only an initial charge. Our sources say the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 4XE models will come in standard and long-wheelbase versions. The hybrid system for these models will differ significantly from the current Jeep 4XE models, instead resembling the recently announced Ram 1500 Ramcharger. This makes sense as the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer share a modified version of the Ram 1500’s frame.

In the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, the hybrid system combines a liquid-cooled 92 kWh battery pack with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and a 130 kW generator. This setup powers 250 kW front and 238 kW rear Electric Drive Modules (EDMs), which integrate the motor, gearbox, and inverter to enable all-wheel drive. The front EDM features an automatic wheel-end disconnect for improved efficiency, allowing the front wheels to rotate freely under certain conditions. The rear axle contains a second EDM and an optional electronic-locking rear differential.

The system operates sequentially: the Pentastar V6 engine drives the onboard 130 kW generator, which converts mechanical power into electrical energy. This energy recharges the battery and powers the EDMs to propel the vehicle. Notably, the engine and the wheels have no direct mechanical connection.

The Pentastar V6 engine is specifically designed for its role as a generator, with unique packaging to fit the front EDM. The generator is mounted directly to the engine, while a power inverter module is placed on the vehicle and connected to a junction box.

The 92-kWh battery pack, using liquid cooling and pouch cell technology, is positioned beneath the truck’s floor in the center, maintaining a flat cargo area. Ram’s fast-charging solution allows for up to 50 miles of all-electric range with just a 10-minute charge using 400-volt DC fast charging at up to 145 kW.

The Ram 1500 Ramcharger boasts a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, 663 horsepower, and over 615 lb.-ft. of torque, with a towing capacity of up to 14,000 lbs using a class 5 hitch. Similar performance is expected from the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 4XE, although their towing capacity will likely be lower.

This hybrid system allows for daily commutes on battery power alone with home recharging, while the gasoline engine can charge the batteries on longer trips, eliminating range anxiety. Since the gasoline engine only acts as a generator, it uses less fuel than typical plug-in hybrid setups where the engine also drives the wheels.

Stay tuned to MoparInsiders for more updates on the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 4XE models.
