Refreshed Jeep® Wrangler Nails Latest IIHS Crash Test

Refreshed JL Gets Top Marks in Tougher Crash Safety Exam

The refreshed 2024 and 2025 Jeep® Wrangler (JL) have officially earned solid marks in the latest crash safety evaluations by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), particularly in the updated moderate overlap front crash test. Despite a few hiccups in secondary safety features, the iconic off-roader remains a top contender in rugged capability with a stronger safety story than ever before.

During the updated moderate overlap front crash test—now performed at 40 mph—the four-door Wrangler passed with mostly flying colors. Out of ten safety categories evaluated, it received nine “Good” ratings and just one “Acceptable” rating. The acceptable mark came from how the rear crash test dummy’s head contacted the rear roll bar trim. Fortunately, the seatbelt stayed properly in place during impact, keeping the test dummy’s chest and pelvis well-secured.

While crash structure and front-seat occupant protection were both rated as strong, the IIHS noted that Jeep still has room to improve in crash avoidance tech. Most notably, the Wrangler currently lacks any sort of pedestrian detection or automatic emergency braking system for front crash prevention. That earned it a disappointing “Poor” rating in the vehicle-to-pedestrian test.

Headlight performance also let the Wrangler down a bit. Jeep offers four different headlight setups on 2025 models, but three of them received “Poor” ratings due to weak low-beam visibility and glare. Even the highest-end LED projector headlights only managed a “Marginal” score.

Another area for improvement was the seatbelt reminder system, which was rated “Marginal” due to a low-volume warning and delayed activation after startup. However, Jeep earned back some credit with its LATCH child seat anchors, receiving a top “G+” (Good Plus) score for the four-door Wrangler Sport model with cloth rear seats—one of the best in the segment.
