Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has announced it is recalling 485,109 of it’s 2015 to 2018 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups equipped with the 8-foot long box configuration to upgrade their power locking tailgate mechanisms. According to the statement released by FCA, only 2018 model year Rams are affected if they were produced before March 31st, 2018.
Upon an internal investigation by FCA, the company discovered that the power locking mechanisms in the tailgates of the trucks share a small internal component that could fail over time. If the mechanism fails, it may cause the tailgate to unlatch. The company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents related to the issue.
Trucks equipped with manual tailgate locks are excluded from the recall.
According to the company, 410,351 of the trucks are located in the United States, 63,753 are in Canada, 4,020 are in Mexico, and 6,985 are located outside the North American market.
FCA is mailing notifications to owners this month for information in scheduling service from certified Ram dealers to replace the recalled part. FCA also stated that it is reminding owners that “all loose cargo should be secured while driving, as stated in the operating manuals”.
