Ram Secures Patent for Innovative Third-Row Jump Seats
evolutionary Design in Ram 1500 Concept Could Redefine Pickup Truck Utility...
Ram has secured a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its innovative third-row jump seat design, as featured in the Ram 1500 Revolution Concept. This concept vehicle, unveiled at CES 2023, offers a glimpse into the potential of all-electric pickups, showcasing a host of futuristic features, including these unique seats.
The Concept and Its Innovations –
Nearly 50 years ago, Ram introduced the Club Cab, offering second-row seating in its trucks. Now, the company is pushing the envelope further with third-row jump seats. The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept included a powered mid-gate with mounted jump seats, allowing for multiple seating configurations and additional cargo space.
These jump seats, designed to be compact and versatile, can be folded out from the rear wall of the cab. The mid-gate also features powered glass, enabling a pass-through that can accommodate objects up to 18 feet long when the tailgate is closed. This innovative design offers flexibility and convenience, making the concept truck a standout in terms of interior space and functionality.
Patent Details –
The recent patent filing with the USPTO, as discovered by CarBuzz, solidifies Ram’s intent to explore this third-row seating concept. The patent illustrations closely match the seats showcased in the concept vehicle, complete with padded backrests attached to the rear wall. These seats can be easily removed and mounted to the tailgate or other flat surfaces, demonstrating their adaptability.
Production Possibilities –
While the patent filing indicates serious consideration, it does not guarantee that the third-row jump seats will make it to production. The 2025 Ram 1500 REV, expected to hit showrooms later this year, retains the traditional second-row seating configuration. Introducing a third row would require significant design changes, such as extending the cab or shifting the second row forward, which could take time to implement.
Future Implications –
If Ram succeeds in integrating a third row of seats into its trucks, it could significantly impact the pickup market. This feature could make pickup trucks more appealing to families, potentially replacing minivans as the go-to option for spacious, versatile vehicles. Ram’s forward-thinking approach demonstrates their commitment to meeting consumer needs and maximizing the utility of their trucks.
