Next-Gen Jeep® Renegade Could Be A Game Changer

Global Subcompact SUV Designed for Today’s Drivers

We’ve been hearing the rumors for a while now, and it looks like they’re starting to take shape—Jeep® is officially working on bringing the Renegade nameplate back to North America for the 2027 model year. And this time, it’s not just a facelift—it’s a complete redesign from the ground up, aimed at affordability, versatility, and electrification.

If you remember the first-gen Renegade (BU), launched in 2015, it was a gateway into the Jeep lifestyle for a lot of first-time buyers. It gave people Jeep’s signature off-road attitude in a compact, city-friendly package. The model was discontinued in the U.S. and Canada after the 2023 model year, but it’s lived on in places like Europe and South America, where it’s continued to evolve.

So what’s new with the 2027 Renegade? Let’s break it down.

Built for the Future – And the Budget –

Jeep’s next-generation Renegade will ride on Stellantis’ STLA Small platform, which was built specifically for compact and affordable electrified vehicles (EVs). While Jeep has confirmed that the Renegade will offer an all-electric version, don’t be surprised if it also launches here as a hybrid or even a small turbocharged gas model.

Upon its initial announcement, an all-electric Renegade model was said to start at $25,000 in the U.S., making it one of the most affordable EVs in the U.S. market. However, we would seriously be impressed if they could do such a thing given tariffs and how inflation has been over the past couple of years. That price point is key, especially as EV interest cools off a bit and buyers lean more toward hybrids or budget-friendly options.

Multiple Powertrain Choices –

One of the most exciting aspects of the 2027 Renegade is its versatility in powertrain offerings, which will cater to a variety of markets and customer needs.

Turbocharged ICE Option: Jeep is expected to include a small turbocharged internal combustion engine (ICE) for regions where traditional gasoline powertrains remain popular. This option ensures that the Renegade can compete in markets with developing EV infrastructures.

Hybrid Variant: A hybrid powertrain will likely be offered for those seeking efficiency without fully transitioning to electric. This option could pair a compact gasoline engine with electric assist, providing enhanced fuel economy and lower emissions—a key feature for regions like South America and Europe.

All-Electric Version: The Renegade’s electric variant is expected to feature a 44 kWh battery, delivering a range of approximately 199 miles (320 km), similar to the other Stellantis subcompact EV offerings in Europe. This model will be particularly important for European markets, where emissions standards are tightening, The electric motor’s instant torque will improve urban performance and off-road capability, aligning with Jeep’s rugged reputation. This variety of powertrains will ensure the Renegade remains competitive across a wide range of markets, from those prioritizing affordability to those adopting strict emissions regulations.

Each powertrain will still carry Jeep DNA, with available all-wheel drive (AWD) and possibly even a Trailhawk-style off-road package.

Room for Five (Or Seven in Europe) –

We are told by our sources that for North America, Jeep will focus on a 5-passenger configuration, keeping the Renegade compact and easy to park while still roomy enough for a small family or adventure gear.

That said, the European rumor mill says a 7-passenger version could debut in Europe. It would likely be based on a variation of the Citroën C3 Aircross, offering extra seating for markets where small three-row vehicles are in demand.

Squared-Up New Look –

While no official images have dropped yet, we’re expecting the 2027 Renegade to look a lot tougher and more squared-off—think mini-Wrangler meets baby Wagoneer. Jeep wants this thing to look like a Jeep, and that means upright proportions, rugged fender flares, and bold front-end styling.

Design cues will likely borrow from newer models like the Avenger, Compass, Wagoneer S, and Recon EV.

Production Plans –

Don’t expect this new Renegade to be built in Italy like before. Production is expected to shift to regions optimized for STLA Small platform builds, likely in South America or Europe, depending on trim and powertrain. Jeep will need flexibility to produce the Renegade in hybrid, electric, and gas forms to meet global demand.

A Global SUV with a Local Focus –

The Renegade’s comeback shows Jeep’s commitment to offering a vehicle for every kind of driver. Whether you’re looking for an affordable EV, a gas-sipping hybrid, or a small SUV with genuine Jeep character, the 2027 Renegade might just be the right fit.

If Jeep sticks the landing, this new Renegade could be a big deal—especially in a market that’s craving sub-$30K vehicles with personality.

Could this be built stateside? Lets face it, this "Smart" platform and its forebear the CMP have become the revenge of the K-platform. As someone once famously said, "It's Deja Vu all over again." In Europe the eCMP platform supports a Jeep Avenger and a Lancia rally racer with all the different brands each having unique styling. The K-car spawned all sorts of offspring, from the square originals to the beautiful Le Baron convertible, so this is nothing new.

Where am I going with all this? Perhaps if the legacy Mopar brands also each had their own C-segment product built on the Smart platform this would justify a production line in the US. We could have a small crossover for Chrysler, a tall hatchback for Dodge, the Renegade, and perhaps also a mini-Gladiator.

With the the current state of affairs in our market, the only way to offer battery electric versions would be using swappable batteries, while offering lease deals. For a Jeep Renegade there should be 2 different IC engine variants, a 48V mild hybrid with e-axle like the Jeep Avenger 4Xe, and a high voltage hybrid using the battery electric version's rear e-axle. The IC engines need to be built here, but I don't know if any of our North American engines will fit under the hood.

The Jeep people had better study the interior of the Slate Pickup truck. Many of us have our own tablets, nearly all of us have a smart phone. The base trims in both the Fiat Grande Panda and Fiat 500e have cradles for smart phones or perhaps a tablet. I don't want a tablet like control center glued to the top of my dashboard, keep things simple and unobtrusive.

Briefly, all these necessary products for Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram had better find space and resources to be built in America. That must include plant expansions and flexible manufacturing methods in current factories. I see Canada as part of a possible solution, if and when the Canadian government comes to their senses and drops all tariffs with America. The Canadian unions and workers must speak up and get this done. Looking realistically at this, our President will never bend on his policies, he certainly has the advantage, and looking at polls, it’s likely he and his successor will be calling the shots for at least a decade or more.
Like it or not, Stellantis must face reality and funnel money into the “new” North American market needs or loose it largest money maker to denial and foot dragging.

I completely expect it to look like the newer squarer Jeeps. Closer to Recon, Compass and Cherokee. The AI really just took the existing Renegade and squared up the grille a little. lol

Under the hood, it sounds like we're pulling from the info we have on Compass and tossing it in there as Renegade because they were platform mates before.

"New SUV " ? Take a brick and put a 2/3 size brick on top, push the top brick back to line up with the rear of the base brick, round off the corners and we have a SUV ! Magic ? Or cookie cutter ? Then price it comparable others in it's class and we have a failure ? It's going to take more than a " me too " to compete in this segment and win ! Where is a break thru on price, design, or features? Then there is the quality issue brought to us by the cost cutting former wizard CEO !
