New Details Emerge in Tragic Stellantis Dundee Plant Accident

UAW Member’s Death Raises More Questions as Retooling Continues

This past Monday, we told you about the tragic accident at the Dundee Engine Plant that claimed the life of a United Auto Worker (UAW). Now, we are learning more details about the situation—and about the man who tragically lost his life while helping prepare the facility for future production.

Ronnie Adams, a 62-year-old skilled tradesman and Detroit resident, was working overnight on the assembly line when he was crushed by a mechanical arm that pinned him against a conveyor. The accident happened around 1:25 a.m. at the Stellantis Dundee Engine Plant in Dundee, Michigan. First responders quickly arrived, and Adams was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the incident involved a machine malfunction during ongoing retooling operations. Adams was part of a small crew working to modernize the plant for a $150 million overhaul to launch Stellantis’ new family of engines and battery trays for hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs).

Adams brought decades of technical experience to the job. Before joining Stellantis, he had worked as an aircraft mechanic for Delta and Northwest Airlines. According to various sources, he was respected among his peers for his precision, leadership, and professionalism.

His wife, Shamenia Stewart-Adams, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, writing:
“Our family is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of my husband, Ronald E. Adams Sr. Please keep us lifted in your prayers as we prepare for the days ahead of us.”

The upgraded Dundee Engine Complex is expected to build the all-new, turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 engine destined for the upcoming Jeep® Cherokee (KM). The project comes at a challenging time for Stellantis, whose U.S. production has already been impacted by engine shortages at its Saltillo, Mexico plant. The company’s stock has also taken a major hit over the past year, dropping nearly two-thirds in value.

The company has not yet released an official statement detailing the accident, nor has it said whether safety protocols were in place at the time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams family during this incredibly difficult time.
