797 Horsepower Durango SRT Wins Truck/SUV Class At One Lap Of America:

Supercharged Durango Takes Home Top Honors...

Last week, we told you about Dodge’s unique 2019 Dodge Durango SRT build for the Brock Yates’ One Lap Of America. Dodge//SRT engineers shoehorned in the 797 horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 from the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT HELLCAT Redeye into the already performance-oriented SUV.  Dodge//SRT engineers were attempting to back up their win at last year’s One Lap Of America in the Truck/SUV category, and they did with their Police themed 2019 Dodge Durango SRT Pursuit “Speed Trap” Concept.

Over seven days, SRT Vehicle Dynamics Performance Engineer David Carr and Automotive Photojournalist David Hakim put 4,000 miles both on the road travel and racing to 18 scheduled events at 8 venues in 7 different states. Talk about punishing drivers and their vehicle.

During the start of the event, the team started out a little hairy with a 49th place finish on the Tire Race Wet Skid Pad in South Bend, Indiana.  However, after the team left South Bend, they raced up top-20 and top-25 finishes started adding up and becoming a real problem for many of the sports cars and high-powered touring cars competing in the events. The 5,000 pound supercharged Durango using Pirelli PZero 305/35/R20 rubber from the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT HELLCAT Widebody, showed it had no problem making the Mopar revised rate lowering spring equipped Bilstein ADS shocks work as it carved corners at Nelson’s Ledges, Road Atlanta, Brainerd Road Course, Blackhawk Farms, and NCM Motorsports Park.

At the drag strip, the “Speed Trap” posted a solid 11.53-second pass. The 797 horsepower “Speed Trap” faced vehicles in its class that included another heavily modified Durango SRT and even a 707 horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Although the pass was fast at the track, the Durango lost in round two of the bracket race by going faster than their dial-in pass.

In the end, the “Speed Trap” preserved by winning the Truck/SUV class, that featured an all-Mopar field this year. Not only did the team take home the class title, but they finished 18th overall. That means the 797 horsepower SUV defeated 59 competitors in the overall points, with vehicles that included several performance BMW M cars, Nissan GT-Rs, Vipers, Mustangs, and Corvettes.

MoparInsiders, broke the word about the SRT engineering team working on a future supercharged Durango and after seeing how well the “Speed Trap” performed, we hope that the vehicle is equipped with the 797 horsepower engine from the Redeye.
