It’s been 95 years (April 25th, 1926) since the first race car ever to bear the brand’s iconic “trident” logo took the checkered flag and capturing the brand’s first win in the 1,500cc class at the Targa Florio with Alfieri Maserati behind the wheel.
Fast forward 28 years later on January 17th, 1954, the Italian automaker enter the Formula 1 (F1) championship with its 250F race car by Juan Manuel Fangio. A partnership that would lead to 21 races, 1 world championship (Maserati’s only one), and 7 wins. Fangio is considered to be one of the greatest drivers in F1 history with five world championships.
Despite ending his career in 1958, Fangio still holds several records including highest-percentage of wins (47.1% from 24 wins in 51 starts), highest-percentage of pole positions, highest-percentage of front-row starts with (94.1% or 48 times in 51 starts), as well being the oldest world champion (46 years, 41 days old), and won more champions with various teams including (Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Maserati).
Now the Maserati brand is celebrating by introducing its latest special edition called the “F Tributo”. The “F” stands for Fangio, of course. Shown off for the first-time at this past week’s 2021 Shanghai Auto Show in China, the F Tributo package is offered on Levante and Ghibli models.
The Levante and Ghibli F Tributo Special Editions are available in Rosso (Red) or Azzurro (Blue) Tributo exterior colors. The two exclusive colors intimately connected the brand to its motorsports background. With Rosso representing Italy in motor racing in the early years of the last century. While the bright, vibrant blue color of Azzurro Tributo and the distinctive yellow calipers pay homage to the city of Modena and the return of racing in 2004 with the iconic MC12 supercar.
There are more references to Fangio’s 250F racer, which had which had a distinctive red and yellow livery, in the yellow brake calipers and the wheel trim. To complete the exterior look, the Levante F Tributo is fitted with a set of Black Anteo 21-inch wheels, while the Ghibli F Tributo wears a set of 21-inch Titano wheels finished in Gloss Black. A unique Gloss Black fender badge and body-colored trident logo on the C-pillar, to tie the theme together.
Inside, Maserati has finished the interior with Black full-grain “Pieno Fiore” leather with a unique red or yellow stitch pattern. There is also high-gloss carbon fiber accents placed throughout the interior to add more of a performance look and feel to the cockpit of both vehicles. Pricing for the special edition duo has not been released.
