It’s Race Day – AAA Texas Fall Nationals:
Johnson Jr. Qualified #1 In Funny Car...
It is an important day in the Countdown to the Championship standings, for the NHRA Mopar teams. Being the third of six events that make up the countdown, most of the Mopar teams that struggled at the last event in St. Louis are looking to make up the points with strong performances in Texas.
In Top Fuel, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher who is current third in the points standings (121 points behind the leader), qualified third for this weekend’s race. He goes up against Shawn Reed in the first round at the Texas Motorplex.
Papa John’s / Mopar Top Fuel driver Leah Pritchett, struggled to find a good setup for the car on Friday and Saturday during qualifying. She qualified ninth and goes up against Kebin Kinsley in the first round. Leah, sits in fourth place in the points (154 points behind the leader).
In Funny Car, Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T driver Tommy Johnson, Jr. qualified on the top spot on Friday with a 3.918 at 321.73mph run. It was Johnson’s first #1 qualifier of the year. He goes up against Terry Haddock in the first round. Johnson, sits sixth in the Funny Car points (104 points behind the leader).
“Fast Jack” Beckman, took his Infinite Hero Foundiation Dodge Charger SRT HELLCAT to a fifth place qualifying position in Texas. Beckman, will go up against Courtney Force in the first round of eliminations. Currently ninth in the points (157 points behind the leader), Beckman is hoping gain some ground at the halfway point of the countdown.
Ron Capps and his NAPA Auto Parts team, managed a seventh qualifying position. Capps, will face John Force in the first round of eliminations today. Capps currently sits fifth in points after qualifying (88 points behind the leader). Capps is still running his successful Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car body, which he is hoping will take him to another win today.
Matt Hagan, has been struggling this last part of the season with his new Dodge Charger SRT HELLCAT funny car body. That streak continued this weekend, with Hagan qualifying fifteenth. Hagan is still seventh in points (126 points behind the leader). He will face Bob Tasca III in the first round of eliminations at Texas.
