Stellantis Workforce Changes Prompt UAW President’s Strong Response

539 Supplemental Employees Have Been Let Go, As Of Last Friday...

Stellantis recently announced the permanent separation of 539 supplemental employees in its U.S. manufacturing operations, raising concerns, notably from United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain.

The affected employees were notified last Friday, and the separation took immediate effect. Stellantis clarified that these actions are not considered layoffs, making the impacted workforce ineligible for supplemental unemployment benefits.

In defense of the decision, a Stellantis spokesperson mentioned the company’s regular assessments of staffing levels to enhance operational efficiency. These measures, part of the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, aim to improve overall efficiency, productivity, and market competitiveness. The spokesperson stated, “This action will help improve the efficiency, productivity, and market competitiveness of our facilities.”

These workforce changes are part of a broader series within Stellantis, including temporary layoffs at the Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack (DACM) facility (2,453 workers) and layoffs at the Toledo Assembly Complex (1,225 employees). These adjustments align with Stellantis’ strategic shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), requiring fewer assembly workers despite higher production costs.

UAW President Shawn Fain expressed his concerns during a recent Facebook Live event, calling the move a “heinous” and “shameful activity.” He emphasized the union’s commitment to fighting for the affected workers and stated that the union did not endorse Stellantis’ decision. Fain said, “We’re going to fight like hell to get people back to work,” and highlighted ongoing efforts by the labor department and Vice President Rich Boyer to address the situation.

Seems like the UAW is going to have to choose a side: support a broad agenda that in effect regulates a smaller workforce, or support the members. I'm not sure it is feasible to have both ways at the same time.

They need to walk out, stop production, make it hurt their wallet.
