The Stellantis Pomigliano Assembly Plant, located near Naples in Italy, faced operational challenges as a scorching heatwave swept through the region. The extreme temperatures made it difficult for workers, especially those involved in producing the popular Fiat Panda, to carry out their tasks safely and efficiently.
As a result, the automotive group decided to take proactive measures, including a voluntary stoppage of work, to prioritize the well-being of its workforce. This move followed an earlier spontaneous stoppage initiated by workers when rising temperatures became unbearable. To address the situation, Stellantis held discussions with union representatives and unveiled plans to ensure a safer and more comfortable working environment for its employees during the heatwave.
In recent days, Italy has been grappling with a relentless heatwave, leading to soaring temperatures in various regions. The Stellantis Pomigliano Assembly Plant, responsible for manufacturing Fiat Panda, Alfa Romeo Tonale, and Dodge Hornet SUVs, experienced adverse effects due to the sweltering conditions. Workers at the Fiat Panda production line, in particular, found it increasingly challenging to cope with the intense heat while carrying out their daily tasks.
The wellbeing of the workforce remains a top priority for Stellantis, prompting the automotive group to implement necessary measures to protect its employees during the heatwave. In response to the unfavorable working conditions caused by the extreme temperatures, Stellantis decided to initiate a voluntary stoppage of work at the Pomigliano plant. This step was taken after workers on the Panda production line spontaneously stopped work on a previous occasion, citing the unmanageable heat as the reason.
In light of the concerning situation, Stellantis promptly convened meetings with union representatives to address the challenges posed by the ongoing heatwave. The discussions aimed to devise an effective plan to safeguard worker safety and optimize production efficiency. During these meetings, both parties discussed potential solutions and committed to finding viable ways to maintain a conducive work environment amid the heatwave.
As a part of the plan to mitigate the impact of the heatwave, Stellantis pledged to activate cooling systems at the Pomigliano plant 24 hours a day. This should help keep the facility cooler, even during off hours.
