Gilles Vidal Tapped To Lead Stellantis Design In Europe

Award-Winning Designer Returns To Stellantis To Shape Future Of European Brands

Stellantis is bringing back one of the most celebrated design leaders in the automotive world. Starting October 1st, Gilles Vidal will take over as Head of Design for Stellantis’ European Brands, replacing the retiring Jean-Pierre Ploué. He’ll be reporting directly to Jean-Philippe Imparato, Stellantis’ Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Enlarged Europe, and will also collaborate closely with Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles.

For anyone who’s followed French automotive design over the last two decades, Gilles Vidal is a familiar name. He spent over 25 years between Citroën and Peugeot, playing a pivotal role in shaping modern European cars that stand out for their sleek design and strong brand identity. Models like the Peugeot 208, 308, and 3008—all of which won European Car of the Year titles—carry his signature design DNA.

Ralph Gilles praised Vidal’s return, saying, “Gilles’ experience will be critical for Stellantis. He is a first-class design expert whose vehicles have been awarded European Car of the Year five times over the past decade.” Gilles also took a moment to thank outgoing design head Jean-Pierre Ploué for his impact on revitalizing several Stellantis brands.

Now returning to Stellantis after a five-year stint at Renault Group, Vidal brings with him a resume packed with success and a vision that merges modern aesthetics with classic brand values.

“As I join Stellantis back, I am enthusiastic to return to my roots,” said Vidal. “In a world where technology and design should walk hand in hand to transform customer experience, I am excited with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Vidal’s new role puts him in charge of design for everything from compact city cars to commercial vans across Stellantis’ European portfolio. That includes brands like Peugeot, Opel, Citroën, and Fiat—each with their own identity and customer base.

Jean-Philippe Imparato emphasized just how important this move is, saying, “His deep understanding of European automotive culture and his forward-thinking design philosophy will be essential as we continue to redefine mobility and strengthen the identity of our European brands.”

It’s a big job. But with Gilles Vidal’s track record, Stellantis seems confident he’s the right person to take its European design strategy into the future.
