FIRST LOOK: 2023 Jeep® Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer Lineup!
Longer Wheelbase, Hurricane Turbo Power, & Best-In-Class Attributes...
As the Jeep® Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer (WS) enter their second year of production, the new 2023 lineup looks to be even more promising for the full-size premium duo. With new engine options and a longer wheelbase variant, both vehicles look to appeal to a larger crowd.
Extended Wheelbase “L” Models –
Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) earlier this year, the new Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are 12-inches longer overall (226.7 inches) over the standard-wheelbase models.
Featuring a 130-inch wheelbase (7-inches longer than the standard wheelbase), and up to 44.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row (15.8 more cubic feet than the standard wheelbase), the 2023 “L” models were designed to provide unmatched comfort for up to 8 passengers with the second-row bench (7 passengers with second-row captains chairs) and ample cargo room for even more items.
Mirroring the standard wheelbase lineup, the “L” models offer three available 4×4 systems, the best-in-class towing capability of up 10,000 lbs., available off-road-oriented All-Terrain packages, and advanced safety and technology.
Powertrain –
The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer lineup has a total of four engine choices depending on the trim level chosen.
5.7-liter HEMI (Wagoneer Series I) –
The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V8 returns for 2023, as the powerplant under the hood of the standard wheelbase Wagoneer Series I. The 5.7-liter HEMI combines next-generation eTorque mild-hybrid assist, multi-displacement system (MDS), and variable valve timing (VVT) to help provide efficiency without sacrificing horsepower, torque, and capability.
The 5.7-liter delivers 392 horsepower and 404 lb.-ft. of torque.
Twin-Turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane S.O. (Wagoneer L Series I, Wagoneer/Wagoneer L Series II and III) –
The all-new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane S.O. inline-six-cylinder engine with Engine Start/Stop offers customers 420 horsepower and 468 lb.-ft. of torque. While the new Hurricane S.O. engine provides more power and fewer emissions, the EPA has yet to release official fuel economy numbers for the S.O. model just yet.
6.4-liter HEMI (Grand Wagoneer Series I, Optional on Grand Wagoneer Obsidian) –
The mighty 6.4-liter HEMI V8 returns for 2023 as the standard powerplant on Grand Wagoneer Series I models. Delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque, the 6.4-liter was engineered to provide a board torque band to deliver the optimal blend of power and comfort regardless of the load and terrain.
The 6.4-liter HEMI is available as a no-cost option on Grand Wagoneer Series II and III Obsidian models.
Twin-Turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane H.O. (Grand Wagoneer L Series I, Grand Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer L Series II and III) –
The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane H.O. inline-six-cylinder engine (known as the Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510) also offers Engine Stop/Start technology and delivers a massive 510 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque for outstanding performance. When properly equipped, the Grand Wagoneer with Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510 power can tow up to 9,750 lbs.
8-Speed 8HP75 TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission –
Standard across the lineup, the fully-electronic 8-speed 8HP75 TorqueFlite automatic transmission offers a wide spread of gear ratios that help keep engine RPM in the right range for the task whether for everyday tasks, highway cruising, or hauling gear to the weekend getaway. Electronic Range Select (Tow/Haul Mode) enables optimized shifting when trailering a load.
Towing –
The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer features best-in-class towing capacity. When properly equipped, the Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 9,850 lbs. while the Wagoneer has a towing capacity of up to 10,000 lbs.

Off-Road-Oriented –
The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer has three available 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II), Quadra-Lift air suspension (available on Wagoneer, standard on Grand Wagoneer), and Selec-Terrain traction management system, enable the true Jeep 4×4 off-road capability of the full-size premium SUV.
Quadra-Trac I delivers full-time four-wheel drive without any switches to push or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation of the vehicle over a variety of road conditions. This proven, lightweight single-speed transfer case is efficient for enhanced fuel economy and improves traction by moving torque to the wheel with the most grip.
The Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and takes corrective action. The system also uses the throttle to anticipate quick movement from a stop and maximizes traction before tire slippage occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the wheel with the most traction.
Quadra-Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.
Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II and five settings: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud. This feature electronically coordinates braking, 4×4 torque split, and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, Hill-Descent Control (HDC), and Selec-Speed Control.
The Selec-Terrain system has been refined for Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer duty and offers five different driving conditions to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains:
- Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation
- Sport: Engaged with the push of a button and provides enhanced on-road “fun-to-drive” capability
- Rock: Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to a maximum height of 10 inches, while the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control
- Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads
- Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque tuned for optimal performance in sand/mud
Selec-Speed Control with Hill-Ascent and HDC allows drivers to control vehicle speed both up and down steep, rugged grades with Electronic Range Select (ERS) control on the steering wheel – without the need for throttle or brake pedals.
Selec-Terrain, coupled with the Quadra-Lift air suspension, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers legendary 4×4 performance.
To protect critical vehicle components, the optional Advanced All-Terrain Package on Wagoneer/Wagoneer L features four aluminum skid plates, including one for the lower front fascia, fuel tank, transfer case, and front suspension, instilling Wagoneer models its iconic legendary capability.

While the Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer models are more expensive than their respective competition, customers are paying a premium for the Jeep brand. But with that premium, they are getting the most luxurious Jeep ever produced with best-in-class attributes.
All we can say is, thank smart before purchasing a Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer model. If you pay attention to the ordering spectrum, sometimes it is cheaper to step up to the next trim level up than fully equip a specific model with every option.
If it is our choice, two models, in particular, stand out. The Wagoneer L Series II with the Advanced All-Terrain Package seems to be the best all-around choice in our book for off-road capability, space, and towing ability. But save your money on options like the optional passenger side interactive screen, as it may seem like a cool feature, but doesn’t do enough to really justify its additional $1,395 cost.
Our other choice is the Grand Wagoneer Series I standard wheelbase. By the time you start clicking on option boxes for the Wagoneer Series III, but might as well jump up to the Grand Wagoneer Series I which includes the following features.
- Distinctive Grand Wagoneer Front and Rear Fascias
- Gloss Black-Painted Roof
- 12.3-Inch Driver Information Digital Cluster Display
- 12-Inch Uconnect® 5 Infotainment Touchscreen with Navigation
- Heated and Ventilated Premium Nappa Leather-Trimmed Front Seats (with 24-Power Adjustment and Massage Settings)
- MX950 McIntosh® Entertainment System with 19 Speakers
- 6.4-liter HEMI V8
- Quadra-Lift® Air Suspension with Semi-Active Damping
- ParkSense® Automated Parking System
While the Grand Wagoneer/Wagoneer models are more expensive than their respective competition, you are buying into the Jeep brand. The Grand Wagoneer is still the most luxurious Jeep yet and now the Grand Wagoneer L/Wagoneer L offers those who crave even more space for their ever-growing families.
