When Stellantis took a major stake in China’s Leapmotor back in 2023, many wondered how the company would integrate the brand into its global portfolio. Now we have the answer: Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed that Leapmotor vehicles will soon be rolling out of one of Stellantis’ Spanish plants.

The Fiat Titano was first introduced to South America by assembling knock down kits sent from Changan in China. It was also done in Algeria and marketed as the Peugeot Landtrek pickup. The demand for the Fiat Titano in South America soon outpaced the assembly capacity and a new full production line was built in Argentina using many local parts, including the engine, and a Ram version was also added for the Latin American market.

I bring this up because it will be interesting to see if the same thing happens with Leap. Now if the CDJR brands were to assemble CKD kits here in America, my hope would be they start with the Fiat Smart/small platform vehicles which we don't get. The Ram ProMaster City was imported from Turkey, but has American built engines and transmissions. It was highly successful and such a practice should be followed for any kits assembled here.

Bringing the discussion back to Leap, some of their products are very compelling and I could see the case for offering them here in the USA. I hope that Stellantis would apply the lessons learned a long the way with the Ram PMC sold here and the Chagan pickup sold everywhere but here, use domestic power-train assemblies and as much local content as practical. I also think the Leap interiors are too far out for American tastes.
