There has been a surprising amount of excitement since we posted our article last Sunday about Dodge’s reportedly accelerated release of its upcoming Charger SIXPACK internal combustion engine (ICE) models. It seems that a number of Mopar enthusiasts are truly excited about the twin-turbocharged next-gen Charger, even though it won’t have a HEMI® V8 under the hood. This is great news, especially given how controversial the all-electric Charger Daytona has been.

If it’s anything like it’s ZF predecessors, it will be a gem.

This car has so much potential. the more I learn about it, the more excited I get to actually see it for real. While financially, I will more than likely end up wth the four-door model as it will possibly be a bit less expensive with the standard output hurricane engine, A car with the specs this thing has is nothing to be upset about. Nearly matching a 6.1L Hemi in horsepower and matching the 11-14 6.4L Hemi in torque with all-wheel drive is nothing to turn a nose up at, especially with AWD and what sounds like a very well sorted drivetrain behind it. My biggest hope is that Direct Connection goes all in on these cars and will bring out stage kits and alot of other goodies (cosmetic and performance) that will make these cars really shine. I'm sure the aftermarket performance companies will be all over this car as well with alot of stuff, hopefully even things that wont void the factory warranty on these vehicles! time will tell though

Having driven extensively the pre ZF eight speed Hemi Challenger R/T and the new one, it’s night and day. Huge performance improve to the point of making my 2019 5.7 Hemi Challenger a real beast. I’ve driven Mopar muscle cars since the 60s, most with mild performance mods, and this entry level version with the eight speed is better than any muscle car I’ve owned. I love it totally. Yea you got it right, from the 60s.

Had the 8 speed in my 2013 Charger AWD. Worst transmission ever! Only positive was the gas mileage. I bought the car with 31K at 3 years old. It was already on its second tranny. I put 2 more in until #4 started slipping at 110K, last year. If not for that I would still have her. Best ever car I owned outside of the transmission issue(s)!!!
I really hope this one is a lot better!

Title: "New 8-Speed Transmission Coming To Dodge Charger SIXPACK"

Zero information about what CHANGED to increase the torque rating. Please write an article about the transmission instead of marketing fluff...please. Thank you

I’m no expert, but I think the ZF eight speed did not come in the AWD versions which used a Mercedes sourced trans.

Yours was a Mercedes five speed. Totally different transmission. With that said your experience was still unusual as the Mercedes Tran was noted for being nearly bulletproof

Ok, I still have all my paperwork from my Charger. Unfortunately I can’t find my original window sheet, which was still with the car when I bought it.
So I checked the repair bills from the tranny #2,3 and 4 replacements. All transmissions put into my car at the dealer under my warranty were a 8HP45, ZF Friedrichshafen AG transmission. This/these were 8 speed transmissions. Wondering when the first one went, before I owned it, the 5 speed was replaced with an 8 speed 8HP45? Then my dealer continued to replace them with what was in there? But if the wrong one was installed the first time would it have worked in an AWD car? I do remember my 2013 3.6, shifted more than my 2010 w/the 3.5 which had the 5 speed. I was always told my 2013 DID have the 8 speed. I was told and remember reading that all 3.6 (2011 and newer had the 8 speed except the Police models.
When I was my PDs Fleet Officer and order the Chargers I also remember the police package had the 5 speeds and the stock versions had the 8 speeds. We ran 4 different versions of Chargers in our fleet from 2014 to 2020.

If your ZF 8-speed failed that often there was something else causing it. These transmissions are bulletproof. I've had several with zero issues and my current one in my Jeep Grand Cherokee has 199,700 miles on it as of today and shifts like it's brand new.
