We now know more about the Jeep Cherokee (KM) drivetrain. The 1.6L engine has been upgraded for our market, uses a timing chain, and has slightly more horse power. The engine itself is also built here. The Punch transmission will be absent from our market. Speaking of our market, the consumer preferences here are drifting away from pure battery electric drive. The Compass 4Xe shown in this article is for the EU market and is a pure EV. The Compass for our market can take advantage of the J4U design having space for batteries with the ability to fit an e-axle, and build a 4Xe Compass for domestic demand. The front e-axle can be replaced by a suitable hybrid drive and the rear drive can remain the same but with smaller battery pack.
I don't know if the STLA Medium platform allows for a mechanical AWD setup. Using the off road focused e-axle similar the EU Compass 4Xe should satisfy customers in our market.
In another thread I pointed out that the size of the new KM Cherokee is very close to the dimensions of the WK2 Grand Cherokee. The current Compass sits on a 104" wheelbase with a length of 174" overall. The next Compass (J4U) grows to a 110" wheelbase, with a 179" overall length, and is over 4" wider. Compared to the now departed Cherokee KL, the new Compass is wider, will sit on a wheelbase 3.5" longer, while being 3" less length overall. IMO, this model replaces the KL Cherokee.
