All-New 2026 Jeep® Cherokee (KM) Prepares for Debut Late 2025

All-New 2026 Jeep® Cherokee (KM) Prepares for Debut Late 2025

Jeep’s First-Ever North American Hybrid-Only SUV Breaks Cover This Year

Jeep® fans, the wait is almost over. The all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee (KM) is on its way, and it’s bringing a big change with it: it’s going hybrid-only. That’s right—this will be the first North American Jeep vehicle offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain. No gas-only or plug-in (PHEV) options—just one smart, fuel-saving setup built for adventure.

I posted this in another thread, but it bears repeating here.

The Chrysler product legacy is overdue for another transmission debacle. There was the Ulta-Drive, the CVT in the Belvedere trio cars, which was immediately followed by the DDCT in the Dart. The new Jeep Cherokee with the Punch and a 3,500 lb. tow rating should about do it. Have they used the Punch anywhere else besides Europe and China?

Every generation there is a product from the legacy Chrysler Corporation that was incredibly popular and fatally flawed. Such a product would bring in new buyers, but then convince them never to buy another Chrysler product again. The new Jeep Cherokee with a PSA based motor and Punch transmission might be this generation's version of that phenomenon.

It might be that the 1.6 liter turbo is running on the Miller Cycle for that power rating. We'll see.

@patfromigh

Hmh... Although ex PSA may say that some of their engines are running on Miller cycle I have my doubts because of compression ratio.

On the other hand ex FCA had Miller cycle engine up and running. 1.5 turbo with 160 HP.
Of course in HEV configuration such engine with electric part would have more than 200 HP.

The Miller cycle GSE is also connected to a Magna transmission. The 1.6 liter is being built in Dundee, MI. I'm am hoping the American engineers are able to upgrade it enough for our market.

Don't forget the 9-speed in the Cherokee too lol

And the current PTU recall that they haven't done anything about besides send a letter 7 months ago

Seems like AWD 210hp is the Total on Punch... pretty anemic

Maybe I am not the target. I hope a more potent powertrain is on tap.

So, how is it more capable?

Also, not having a Trailhawk shown as a "Late Availability" trim is a fail IMO

2026 Jeep® Cherokee Returns As A Bold, Boxy Hybrid

North American Exclusive SUV, Gets 37 MPG Combined

The Jeep® Cherokee has long carried weight in the SUV world. From its role in defining the midsize SUV segment in the 1980s to its more recent iterations, the Cherokee has always struck a balance between rugged off-road DNA and family-friendly practicality. After a short hiatus, the Cherokee returns for the 2026 model year as an all-new, boxy, hybrid-powered SUV aimed squarely at reclaiming its spot in the most competitive segment in North America.

I will say I'm not all doom and gloom:

The good:
  • It's larger than KL.
  • 30% more cargo capacity - how does this do vs. Rav4 & CR-V however?
  • "more capable" than something?
  • Better MPGs
  • Standard 4x4
  • Canadian pricing doesn't seem that bad compared to KL and considering standard equipment
  • Regular (87 octane) fuel required for the turbo
  • Physical buttons on steering wheel
  • Wireless charger with easy access
  • Boxier design
  • Better range than KL
  • Better MPGs than KL
  • Off Road Pages might be available on 1st year vehicles 🤡
  • Dedicated (capacitive (n)) buttons for heated/cooled seats & heated steering wheel
  • Optional 360 cameras
  • Still has a spare tire!
  • Gas cap back on the driver's side
  • Household style power plug is still in the back of the center console!
  • Sunroof opens outside of the vehicle vs inside like on KL

The not so great:
  • Black roof
  • No Trailhawk yet
  • Untested powertrain for NA
  • No details on the "more capable"
  • Wheel arches are getting a little round for a Jeep brand vehicle
  • Electronic door handles inside & outside
  • Climate control buttons are capacitive touch
  • HP & torque - although the hybrid system might help with this
  • Lower tow rating than KL
  • FWD biased, like KL
  • Small, turbo I4 engine
  • Reflector LED headlights vs projector LEDs on KL
  • Faux leather on Limited (and Overland?)
  • 2-way lumbar vs 4-way on KL
  • Base vs Laredo vs Limited vs Overland all look very similar
  • New interior chime seems annoying
  • Single layer center console
  • No covered storage below radio
  • Scratchy Interior plastics on rear doors vs. KL
  • Rear cargo opening is shorter vs. KL

Which VW cuz I can’t find a single design cue that reminds me of anything from VW group…. Maybe a bit KIA but other than that it pretty Jeepy
Only VW resemblance I see is the way the headlights trail back onto the fenders like the previous generation Tiguan.

Why not use the FCA 1.3 GSE Firefly, ZF 9 speed automatic with a low range, and have a true plugin hybrid option (which the ZF 9 speed supports)? The 1.3 GSE Firefly is newer than the Peugeot 1.6, and it's also smaller with the same power meaning it's more efficient. The ZF 9 speed issues should be gone by now, but even if they weren't all they really needed to do was convert it to an 8 speed as Ford did GM's 9 speed. So who at Stellantis thought it was a great idea to rush-reengineer a powertrain engineered in France for small city cars, assemble this thing in Mexico so it would be hit by tariffs, and then market this as a Jeep Cherokee with no low range 4WD of all things? This thing is a major abomination, not only to the Jeep and Cherokee namesakes, but also to Jeep customers. Stellantis really thinks people are slow. I would rather have the Dodge Hornet over this thing...

For all of the people asking or hoping for a 2.0 Cherokee, it's more than likely not going to happen. The 2.0 GME Tornado is supposed to be upgraded to the 2.0 GME EVO this year, meaning a 300 hp 2.0 and a 400 hp 2.0 4XE. In other words, the 2.0 will become a large vehicle engine taking the 3.6 Pentastar's spot. The Pacifica and Promaster may be the only FWD vehicles with the 2.0 and 9 auto going forward. Everything else FWD/AWD going forward is likely going to have engine displacement UNDER 2.0 liters. This is why I asked in my first post why Stellantis chose not to use the 1.3 GSE Firefly with the ZF 9 speed in the 2026 Cherokee...
