Dodge CEO Hints at the Return of the HEMI® in the New Charger

Matt McAlear Teases a V8 Comeback for the Charger Lineup

Dodge fans have long been asking one big question: will the HEMI® V8 make a comeback in the new generation of the Dodge Charger? After the 2024 Charger Daytona’s launch, many enthusiasts were left wondering if the iconic HEMI would fit under the hood of the new platform. At a recent media event ahead of the unveiling of the 2026 Dodge Charger SIXPACK, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear dropped a hint that the answer could very well be “yes.”

Here is a thought. Put the Hemi in only the 2 door/coupe Charger R/T and Scat Pack and only in the 4 door Pursuit Police package. Lower the price on the smaller Hurricane I6 for the four door versions and “base” coupes, as an entry level and fleet level.

Slower Scat pack??? MEH.

Put the Demon and Hellcat in SRT models and call it a day.

So it’s starting to feel like the 5.7L/6.4L engines are not coming back to the cars. They’ll do the supercharged 6.2L for a SRT variant, which will be expensive, and they’ll play around with those as their halo cars until the Viper returns. But guys wanting affordable ICE performance will be stuck with the 3.0TT in the foreseeable future. That is truly a bummer. I hope Tim and Matt decide to change course on that.

Yet, another problem still remains. At 4,800 lbs. this car is WAYYYYYY too heavy and so even the mighty 392 Hemi wouldn’t provide suitable performance anymore.

Man, they’ve really botched this terribly. It’s a train wreck.

If one thinks corporate leadership is inconsequential, check out Carlos Tavares and his policy decisions for a fact check. The guy single handedly, along with his “yes men” confederates, brought Stellantis to the brink of collapse. Can one engine save the company? In this case, in North America, I’d say yes and that engine is the Hemi.
The question is how can they get it into everything where it matters. Dodge needs it like we need the air we breathe.
Must have in the Charger, the Cuda and we have it in the Durango. Rams and Jeeps and Chryslers too.
I’ve stated before, the last piece in the Charger puzzle is an entry level model, very basic SO Hurricane that family buyers on a budget, especially in the four door, can afford. I agree completely with Mike on that one. Not to be hysterical, but please get these things out as soon as possible Dodge, you have a whole company to save.

420hp Charger R/T Hurricane S/O AWD
500hp/495tq Charger Roadrunner R/T RWD (with Roadrunner badges, hood, spoiler, wheels, suspension, brakes interior, etc.) Dark horse competitor in both 2 & 4 door config.
550hp Charger Scat Pack Hurricane H/O AWD
670 Charger Daytona EV
797hp Charger Hellcat

not really hard to figure out a lineup in fitting the Hemi in with the Hurricane. I had the wonderful opportunity to experience Roadkill nights this past weekend and I saw the new Six pack Charger, which I am still completely excited about. The Hurricane engine definitely looks shoe horned in there and everything looks tight under that hood. My thoughts about the addition of a V8 is that while it would be nice to have a V8 under the hood of the Charger, what will it do for the overall dynamics of the car adding the weight of the V8 over the nose.
What people don't seem to realize is that we've been through this cycle before. Dodge from the 80s to the early 2000s only had two V8 performance vehicles and that was the Durango and the Dakota. The 90's saw cars like the introduction of the Viper along with cars like the Stealth R/T with the 3.0L twin turbo V6 AWD, Avengers and things like that. We also saw vehicles like the Chrysler 300M that shared the platform with the full size Dodge Sedan known as the Intrepid. As far as performance went, we had the GLH cars of the late 80's along with the Daytona IROC cars and then in the early 2000s we had the rise of SRT with the infamous SRT4 cars, the Neon and the later on the Caliber. So for roughly 20 years (spanning three distinct decades) Mopar performance mostly relied on turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinder cars, which is where we are today.
Looking at it realistically, this generation Charger and a Hemi V8 don't make sense in any way shape or form. A v8 powered midsize pickup with the passenger space of a 2-2row Durango and a 5ft bed would make more sense than a V8 Charger. If possible on the same chassis that the Durango is currently on, just stretched and keep it as a Dodge (Not Ram) and make it the Dodge Rampage for the North American Market. We already know SRT has some skunkworks stuff going on right now and Direct Connection is ramping up so we are going to have stuff for the Six Pack cars but to me, it makes more sense to keep the Charger a six-pack car, add a hybrid transmission to it and a bunch of SRT and Direct Connection parts to it and go from there.

This doesn't Work ...... You have slow expensive versions

Charger Sedan - 2.0T 330HP RWD/AWD
Charger GT - 2.0T 330HP + ZF 200HP boast = 530HP Hybrid AWD
Charger GT+ - 2.0T 330HP + ZF 200HP boast = 530HP PHEV AWD 40 mile EV range
Charger R/T - Hurricane Cat1... drop the S/O bs and market for god sake.
Charger Scat Pack Hurricane Cat2
Charger SRT HellCAT 797hp
Charger SRT Hyper - Hurricane Cat3 + 225hp ZF = 850hp
Charger SRT Demon - 900HP

Daytona... Yes drop Charger from the EV.

Daytona RWD 400V
Daytona R/T 670 HP
Daytona SRT 800V- 900HP+

My god. I actually (partially) agree with TripleT! As far as the double why’s…the base care is an SO Hurricane and that’s fine. No need for a 6.4, they really should do a 600hp-ish 7.0L

Lol. slow expensive versions. As I've said before, I would much rather see them rely on the Hurricane family of engines along with hurricane hybrids. The thing is, I know alot of people still want the Hemi V8 to live on. So it was kind of trying to find a happy medium. As I said further along in my comment, the Hemi really doesn't fit in this generation Charger. At least, not in the same way it did with the 06-23 Charger. The Hurricane engine is already shoehorned into this car and I don't feel like a V8 would have a positive effect on the driving characteristics of this car. I've made several ideal lineups of powertrains in comments before very similar to the one you have. Without being concerned about trying to find a happy balance between those who want the V8 and my own personal thoughts of the new Charger, the V8 wouldn't touch the new car at all. The Hurricane-4 Hybrid cars would have a GT Hurricane-4, GLH (Hurricane-4 w/ a few Direct Connection upgrades) & SRT 4 (Hurricane4 hybrid) variant and the Hurricane-6 cars would have an R/T (Cat-1), Super Bee (Cat-1 Hybrid), Scat Pack (Cat-3)Daytona (Cat-3 Hybrid) & two SRT trim levels with a street-tuned Cat-X powertrain (750+hp) and a SRT Stage 2 With the Street-tuned Cat-X engine mated to a hybrid transmission. That would be my lineup for the Charger and Direct Connection would have a full on catalog with all kinds of upgrades for every single trim level that would make these cars the most factory customizable cars ever produced. From power upgrades, chassis and handling, wheel packages, brake packages with caliper options, hoods, aero upgrades, interior upgrades, lighting, exhaust, etc. And yes each trim level would be offered in 2-door and 4-door. No RWD options, all AWD

I've also said before that Dodge could bring the Viper back as the muscle hot rod sports car we love and it could house all of the Hellcat and Hellephant engines that Dodge puts out from 707hp all the way up to over 1,000hp. At that point, forget going after the Corvette and go after the Mustang GTD but don't be that expensive. V10 is not needed. make everything AWD. Still have the side exit exhaust and everything that makes it a Viper but make it newer and better.

Durango: Powertrains work, needs major updates. Not only to style but to tech. Also, it's time to really focus on making the Durango a more modern performance SUV. Maybe even take some suspension and handling cues from vehicles like the Maserati Levante Trofeo and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to give it more of that Sports car in an SUV body feeling. Now, with these being my 100% unbridled thoughts, I will say this. I really wanted everything to go STLA Large and Hurricane powered. I wanted to see the Durango GT get a 420hp Hurricane Cat-1, Durango GLH get a Cat-1 Hybrid, the R/T Get a 550hp Cat-3, Durango Rumble Bee with a Cat-3 Hybrid and then an SRT Durango get a 750+hp version of the Cat-X engine. I wanted to see it get some of the Hornet's styling cues but still keep alot of the Durango DNA at the same time along with having the wing from the Wagoneer S. No RWD options all AWD. Same as with the Charger, Direct Connection needs to have a full arsenal of upgrades in every aspect to make this SUV an enthusiasts go-to SUV for all-out factory-backed customization even above the Jailbreak options.

Dodge Rampage: (US Market): Durango-inspired stretched STLA Large platform pickup truck with comfortable seating for five along with a five foot multi-use bed with ram boxes and in-bed storage with a folding mid-gate that has a pass-through option as well. a wide-body street truck that would slot under a SLA Frame midsize truck designed to be in the market somewhere between the Ford Maverick and the Honda Ridgeline, powered by the Hurricane-4 and Hurricane-6 powertrains just like the Charger. A truck that operates like a Muscle car. This would genuinely be my ideal Dodge lineup. for the STLA Large platform. That's really what I want from Dodge. I want to see the STLA Medium platform bring back the Dodge Dart with an SXT, R/T GLH and SRT4 trim, same as a Caliber hatchback designed to destroy the Civic Type R on the track. Not to mention a Honda Passport rivalling Dodge Journey and Dodge Nitro all of those SUV powered by a 330hp 2.0L Hurricane EVO I-4. That's what I want to see from the Dodge Brand without thinking about trying to balance the desire for some people having V8s and some not.

I want to see Jeep drop all of the "little" Jeeps and focus on the Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wagoneer. Focus the Gladiator, Wrangler and Cherokee with the 3.0L Cat-1 powertrain and the Grand Wagoneer would get the 550hp version or the optional 6Xe with the 662hp electric system. I want to see Ram really get busy with the new truck and powertrains and the return of a street truck. I want to see the Return of the Chrysler 300M being a sedan inspired by the late-90's 300M but with all of the Charger underpinnings and all of that including the 670hp 400v version and the 800v version with the 3-speed gear box and all of that in both EV powertrains. That's alot of what I would want to see from Stellantis North America
