Alfa Romeo Talks Details About The Junior’s Q4 AWD System

Shares Same System With Jeep® Avenger 4xe...

Alfa Romeo has officially introduced its cutting-edge Q4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) system in the Junior Ibrida, making it the only premium compact car in its class to offer AWD with automated rear-axle management. Sharing its platform with the Jeep® Avenger 4xe, this innovative system uses Power Looping Technology to maintain AWD functionality even when the battery charge is low. With 30,000 orders already placed for the Junior model worldwide, the addition of Q4 technology expands the lineup, offering buyers a blend of efficiency, traction, and performance.

A Smarter AWD for Every Drive Mode –

The Q4 system works seamlessly with Alfa Romeo’s DNA drive mode selector, allowing the vehicle to adapt to various road conditions and driving preferences:

  • Dynamic Mode: Prioritizes performance by ensuring AWD engagement from 0 to 40 km/h (0 to 25 mph) for maximum grip during acceleration. Above that speed, the system optimizes efficiency while maintaining traction when needed.
  • Natural & Advanced Efficiency Modes: The vehicle operates primarily in front-wheel drive (FWD) up to 90 km/h (56 mph) to conserve energy, but AWD activates instantly when additional traction is required.
  • Q4 Mode: AWD remains fully active up to 30 km/h (19 mph) for optimal low-speed traction before transitioning into a smart AWD setup that enhances stability and control.

A standout feature of the Q4 system is its Power Looping Technology, which ensures the rear axle remains powered even when the battery charge is low. The front motor can act as a generator, keeping the rear motor running and guaranteeing consistent AWD capability.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics & Suspension –

The Q4-equipped Junior Ibrida offers improved handling, agility, and control compared to the front-wheel-drive hybrid variant. With torque actively distributed between the axles, the vehicle experiences 30% less understeer, resulting in sharper cornering and a more responsive driving feel.

To complement the AWD system, Alfa Romeo has introduced a MultiLink independent rear suspension—a first for this platform. This advanced setup enhances comfort while maintaining precise handling over rough terrain and in poor weather conditions. The refined suspension system includes optimized springs, dampers, and stabilizer bars, ensuring superior ride quality.

Powertrain & Performance –

The Junior Ibrida Q4 features a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine producing 136 horsepower (101 kW), paired with two electric motors, each generating 21 kW (28 horsepower), for a combined output of 145 horsepower (108 kW). The front electric motor is integrated into a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the second motor is positioned on the rear axle to provide AWD traction without a physical driveshaft.

This innovative hybrid AWD configuration delivers excellent grip in various terrains, making the Junior Ibrida Q4 ideal for drivers facing snowy, muddy, or wet conditions. The system is also well-suited for urban commutes and highway driving, balancing efficiency with AWD capability.

Design & Premium Features –

Alfa Romeo has infused the Junior Ibrida Q4 with premium styling and high-end features, including:

  • Full LED headlights and a refreshed Leggenda badge
  • 18-inch “Petali” aluminum wheels
  • Heated Spiga seats with leather/vinyl trim and electric driver adjustment with massage function
  • 10.25-inch infotainment system with built-in navigation
  • Six-speaker premium sound system
  • Level 2 autonomous driving and a 180-degree rearview camera
  • Hands-free electric tailgate and keyless proximity entry

Efficiency & Environmental Impact –

Despite its AWD capabilities, the Junior Ibrida Q4 maintains impressive efficiency, with CO2 emissions below 120 g/km and fuel consumption kept to a minimum thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. With no mechanical connection between the axles, energy losses are reduced, making this an AWD solution that blends performance with sustainability.

Conclusion –

By incorporating Q4 technology into the Junior Ibrida, Alfa Romeo has set a new benchmark in the premium compact segment. Whether tackling challenging road conditions or providing a dynamic and engaging drive, the Junior Ibrida Q4 delivers the perfect balance between performance, efficiency, and versatility—making it a top contender for drivers who demand more from their compact car.
