63K-Mile 1988 Plymouth Horizon America Heads to Auction

Rare Survivor Hatchback Offered at No Reserve on BringATrailer

The 1980s were filled with compact front-wheel-drive cars that helped American buyers transition away from the land yachts of the previous decades. One of those everyday heroes was the Plymouth Horizon, a practical five-door hatchback built for economy and simplicity. Now, a particularly clean 1988 Plymouth Horizon America with only 63,000 miles is hitting the online auction block at no reserve, offering a rare opportunity to snag a true time capsule.

A Survivor From St. Louis –

This Horizon America was purchased new at Glendale Chrysler-Plymouth in St. Louis, Missouri, and stayed with its original owner until the selling dealer acquired it in 2025. That kind of long-term ownership history is almost unheard of for a budget-friendly economy car, and it helps explain why this example remains in such solid condition today.

Classic 1980s Styling –

Finished in Ice Blue Clear Coat, the car looks every bit the part of a late-’80s commuter, complete with black protective side moldings and a single remote-adjustable driver’s side mirror. A rear window wiper adds a touch of practicality, while factory 13-inch steel wheels complete the look. One hub cover is missing, but that’s a minor blemish on an otherwise tidy presentation. In preparation for the sale, new Forceum Ecosa tires were mounted, and the wiper blades were replaced.

Simple Yet Comfortable Cabin –

Step inside and you’re greeted by high-back bucket seats trimmed in blue vinyl with matching cloth inserts, giving the interior a period-correct two-tone style. Plymouth equipped this model with amenities such as air conditioning (recently converted to R134a refrigerant with a new compressor), a factory cassette stereo, delay wipers, and an electric rear-window defroster. The headliner was replaced before sale, and a center console with storage cubbies and a coin holder rounds out the practical interior touches.

Reliable Four-Cylinder Power –

Under the hood sits Chrysler’s trusty 2.2-liter I4, rated at 96 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque when new. It’s mated to the equally familiar A413 three-speed automatic transaxle. While no one would mistake this car for a muscle machine, the 2.2 was known for decent low-end torque and durability. The transmission fluid was flushed in late 2022, and the oil was changed ahead of the auction. Cooling system maintenance was also performed recently, with fresh coolant added in 2022.

Ready For Its Next Chapter –

Included with the sale is a handwritten log of fuel fill-ups, mileage, and service entries that covers much of the car’s life. A period brochure and other memorabilia are also part of the package, reinforcing the car’s well-documented history. A clean Carfax report shows no accidents or damage, further underlining its survivor status.

With its original charm intact, this 1988 Plymouth Horizon America represents an increasingly rare piece of everyday automotive history. Offered with no reserve, it’s not just a bid for a car—it’s a chance to own a snapshot of 1980s Americana. Bidding ends Tuesday, September 9, at 3:16 p.m. EDT.
