The upcoming Jeep® Compass, codenamed J4U, is set to make significant waves in the automotive world with a bold new direction. Scheduled for its debut in the European market in September 2025, the next-generation Compass will exclusively offer four-wheel drive (4×4) on its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) models, marking a shift in how Jeep approaches electrification.
Production and Launch Timeline –
Production of the J4U will begin in Europe at the Stellantis Melfi Assembly Plant in Italy next summer. This facility is currently responsible for the production of the existing Jeep Compass, the smaller Jeep Renegade, their 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants, and the Fiat 500X. The Melfi plant will not only produce the new Compass but also four other electrified vehicles for various Stellantis brands based on the STLA Medium architecture, a platform designed for maximum flexibility in powertrain options.
Jeep’s North American production is set to follow, with vehicles rolling off the line at the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada. This timing aligns with the brand’s strategy to enhance its presence in both European and North American markets, catering to differing consumer demands.
Electrified Lineup –
The J4U will include three electrified variants for the European market: a full-electric BEV model, a PHEV, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) version. Jeep has long been known for its off-road capabilities, and the decision to limit 4×4 availability to BEV models raises questions about how the brand will adapt its rugged reputation in a landscape increasingly focused on electrification.
“We expect the next-generation Compass to have a range of up to 404 miles (650 km),” noted Jeep representatives, emphasizing the vehicle’s importance as the brand’s most internationally sold model. However, markets like India will not see this new model due to rising costs associated with electrified vehicles, as the current Compass will continue to be sold there for the time being.
Future of Jeep® Powertrains –
In addition to the J4U’s electrified options, Jeep is also developing a full hybrid electric (HEV) model, which could potentially emerge as the brand’s best-selling powertrain globally. Such a model is crucial for areas lacking robust charging infrastructure or where customer demand for BEVs and PHEVs is low.
Antonio Filosa, Jeep® CEO now Stellantis COO for North America, stated, “The STLA Medium architecture will allow the brand maximum flexibility in terms of traction and powertrain offerings to properly serve all our customers worldwide.” This flexibility is essential as Jeep navigates the transition toward electrification while retaining its core off-road appeal.
Design Innovations –
The design of the new Compass is a collaborative effort between Jeep’s main design studio in the U.S. and its European team based in Turin, known for their work on the Avenger. Ralph Gilles, Stellantis’ Chief Design Officer, shared, “The new Compass design features sharper lines and more boxy proportions than the current model,” promising a fresh aesthetic that aligns with the brand’s heritage. The redesigned Jeep seven-slot grille also echoes the style seen on the all-new all-electric Wagoneer S, signaling a unified design language across Jeep’s electric lineup.
