AUCTION: NASCAR-Style 1959 Plymouth Savoy 2-Door Sedan

This Beauty Pays Tribute To "The King's" 1959 NASCAR Season...

Step back in time to the thrilling era of 1959 NASCAR racing with this remarkable 1959 Plymouth Savoy two-door sedan. This classic beauty, sold new by Bell-Wyman Co. in Yakima, Washington, found its way to California in the early 1970s. However, it wasn’t until over 20 years ago, under previous ownership, that the car underwent a transformation into a replica of the legendary white and blue #43 Plymouth, driven by none other than the iconic Richard Petty during the 1959 NASCAR season. Now offered on dealer consignment with no reserve, this modified Savoy sedan carries an exciting history and a wealth of unique features.

Adorned in a striking white and blue livery, the Plymouth Savoy replicates the sponsorship branding and appearance of Richard Petty’s famous #43 car. Chrome bumpers and side-view mirrors add to the vintage charm, while the driver-side front fender bears Petty’s signature, personally applied by the NASCAR legend himself in June 2000. Additionally, the windshield was replaced in 2015 to ensure its continued preservation.

Stepping inside the cabin, you’ll find bench seats trimmed in elegant blue fabric and vinyl, complemented by matching door panels and a color-keyed dashboard. The nostalgic feel is enhanced by black square-weave carpeting covering the floors. Noteworthy features include a roll bar, lap belts for the front occupants, a metal storage area, dual dash-mounted 16 Jewels stopwatches, and a Sanden air-conditioning system, ensuring a comfortable and memorable driving experience.

Under the hood lies a potent 5.2-liter (318 cubic-inch) “Poly” V8 engine, boasting triple two-barrel Rochester carburetors mounted on an Edelbrock intake manifold. In 2017, the engine underwent a comprehensive rebuild by T.O.E. Performance Products of Suisun City, California. This extensive work included balancing the crankshaft, regrinding the camshaft, surfacing the cylinder heads, and replacing several components, such as pistons, rings, main bearings, camshaft, valves, and spark plugs. The engine bay received a refresh during the overhaul, presenting the powerplant in pristine condition.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission featuring an aftermarket overdrive unit for enhanced performance. This transmission was rebuilt in the mid-1980s, ensuring a smooth and authentic driving experience. The sending unit for the replacement fuel tank was also replaced in 2008, further enhancing the vehicle’s overall performance.

The vehicle’s extensive service records, dating back to the early 1970s, will be conveyed to the new owner. In addition, an impressive collection of memorabilia, such as a 1959 Plymouth owner’s manual, a 1959 service manual, and warranty paperwork from April 1959, offers a glimpse into the rich history of this exceptional automobile.
