Mopar muscle car enthusiasts are in for a treat at the upcoming Mecum Monterey 2024 auction, as a legendary 1970 Plymouth HEMI Cuda is set to cross the block on Saturday, August 17th. This particular model, stands out as a unique piece of automotive history.
This HEMI Cuda is believed to be one-of-one, making it a rare gem for collectors. It’s documented in the Chrysler Registry, and its pristine condition is the result of a meticulous concours rotisserie restoration. This thorough restoration process, which included both receipts and a CD of photos, has brought the car back to its original glory.
Under the hood lies the famous 7.0-liter (426 cubic-inch) HEMI V8 engine, a powerplant so renowned it earned its own moniker: HEMI. Equipped with dual 4-barrel carburetors, a high-flow factory exhaust system, and a race-bred reciprocating assembly, this engine is a powerhouse. The factory Shaker hood, introduced in 1970, completes the iconic look and function of this muscle car.
The vehicle was ordered with the Super Performance Axle package, which includes the A727 automatic transmission and a Dana 60 Sure Grip rear axle with a 4.10 gear ratio. This setup ensures robust performance and durability. Additional features such as power disc brakes, an extreme-duty suspension, and a heavy-duty radiator with a seven-blade fan enhance the car’s driving experience.
Originally delivered in Rallye Red, this Cuda has been refinished in the same vibrant color. It sports rare A22 elastomeric front and rear bumpers, a matched red Shaker bubble, black “HEMI” hockey stripes, and a black vinyl top. The interior is equally impressive, featuring black bucket seats, a center console with a Slap Stik shifter, Rallye gauges with a clock and tachometer, a rim-blow steering wheel, a Music Master AM radio, and a remote left-hand mirror.
The exterior is adorned with ribbed lower rocker moldings, “HEMI Cuda” scoop callouts, hood pins, road lamps, and a red-striped grille, making it a visual standout. The highly detailed engine bay and undercarriage showcase the meticulous care that went into its restoration.
