Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has left questions hanging over Maserati’s future electrification plans, following his recent visit to the brand’s historic factory in Modena, Italy. According to statements released by Italian trade unionists from FIOM-Cgil, Tavares failed to confirm the timeline or specific details of Maserati’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), causing growing concerns among workers and industry observers.
Union representatives Samuele Lodi and Stefania Ferrari, who were present at the meeting with Tavares, highlighted a lack of clear communication about the electric version of the Maserati MC20 sports car. Previously, the company had announced plans to launch this model in mid-2025, but this was not reaffirmed during the discussions. “Contrary to what was previously communicated, there was no mention of electric models or any other new vehicles slated for production in Modena,” Lodi and Ferrari stated.
This absence of confirmation has fueled worries about the broader electrification strategy for Maserati. The luxury automaker, known for its high-performance cars, had ambitious goals laid out by its former CEO to completely electrify its lineup by 2028. This strategy included launching an electric Levante SUV in 2027 and an electric Quattroporte sedan in 2028. However, Tavares’ silence has led to speculation about potential delays or revisions to these plans.
Maserati’s new CEO, Santo Ficili, who was recently appointed, joined Tavares during the Modena visit. While Ficili’s leadership aims to rejuvenate the brand, the lack of concrete information has done little to ease the tension among workers and union representatives. The unions are particularly concerned about the plant’s future and potential impacts on job security, given that Maserati’s financial performance has been under scrutiny.
Stellantis has previously dismissed rumors of a Maserati sale, although Tavares has indicated that the group cannot continue supporting brands that remain unprofitable. While Maserati aims to climb back to prominence, industry analysts note that its success heavily depends on a clear path forward, especially in the rapidly evolving EV market.
In a brief note earlier, Stellantis reiterated its commitment to electrification, stating that the company is working on a strategic plan to bring Maserati back to the forefront of the luxury car market, backed by an array of upcoming products and technological advancements. However, until these plans are publicly detailed, uncertainty remains.
