Tragic Accident at Stellantis Toledo Plant Claims Employee’s Life

Worker Crushed by Vehicle on Gladiator Production Line; Investigation Underway...

UPDATED 8/22 @ 10:32 a.m.: A tragic accident occurred today at the Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio, resulting in the death of an employee. The incident occurred at Building #7 on the south side of the plant, where the Jeep® Gladiator (JT) is produced. According to sources, the employee was crushed by a vehicle, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

Toledo police were called to the scene at approximately 1:55 p.m., and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. Lt. Paul Davis of the Toledo Police Department confirmed that officers responded quickly, and investigators from the Lucas County Coroner’s Office were dispatched to the facility. As of now, the identity of the deceased employee has not been released, and details surrounding the incident remain undisclosed.

The Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex, which also produces the Jeep® Wrangler (JL), employs 4,679 workers, including 4,447 hourly and 232 salaried employees working across two shifts. The loss has sent shockwaves through the plant and the local community.

In an official statement, Stellantis acknowledged the incident, stating, “We are aware of an incident at the Toledo Assembly Complex. As this incident is currently under investigation, we cannot provide any further details at this time.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has also been notified of the fatality and has sent compliance officers to the plant to conduct an investigation. OSHA typically takes several months to complete its investigations into workplace fatalities, meaning it could be some time before the exact cause and circumstances of this incident are fully understood.

Previous Fatalities at Toledo’s Jeep Plant –

2005: In January, a shooting incident took place at the North Assembly plant when employee Myles Meyers entered the facility with a concealed shotgun. Meyers used his access card to gain entry and proceeded to shoot three colleagues, tragically killing Supervisor Roy Thacker, before turning the weapon on himself.

2007: A fatal accident occurred at the Toledo North Assembly Plant, then under DaimlerChrysler, when Michael Tiller was found inside a battery washer. The incident occurred early in the morning, prompting security to call for emergency medical assistance. Tiller was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. OSHA launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

2021: A suicide occurred at the Jeep paint shop, which WTOL reported due to its location in a public area. The news station adheres to a policy of reporting suicides only when they occur in public spaces.
