RECALL: Stellantis Recalls 131,177 Ram Heavy Duty Pickups & Chassis Cabs For Fire Risk!

Cummins-Powered Models Could Experience Engine Compartment Fire...

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) is recalling 131,177 units of its 2021 to 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty pickups and Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine, due to the risk of fire. According to the recall, the engine can experience an engine compartment fire originating from the Solid State Intake Heater Grid Relay.

The vehicles affected are as follows…

  • Ram 2500 (DJ) Pickups built between August 3rd, 2020 and October 8th, 2021 (67,597 units)
  • Ram 3500 (D2) Pickups built between August 5th, 2020 and October 8th, 2021 (39,324 units)
  • Ram 3500 Chassis Cabs (DD) built between August 12th, 2020 and October 7th, 2021 (7,317 units)
  • Ram 4500/5500 (DP) Chassis Cabs built between November 13th, 2020 and October 8th, 2021 (16,939 units)
2021 Ram 2500 Big Horn Mega Cab 4×4. (Ram).

Some of the units may experience an engine compartment fire originating from an electrical short in the Intake Air Heater Relay, which can potentially lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition in the “ON” or “OFF” position. A vehicle fire can result in an increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage.

Recall Chronology – 

  • February 17th, 2021 – FCA US Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“VSRC”) opened an investigation
    into 2021 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500/5500 trucks as a result of a detected trend of engine compartment fires.
  • February 2021 – FCA US VSRC conducted an analysis of fire patterns, witness statements, and vehicle
    history and determined all of the affected vehicles were equipped with the Solid State Intake Heater Grid Relay
    and determined it was the origin of the fires.
  • March 4th, 2021 – The FCA US Vehicle Regulations Committee (VRC) determined to conduct a voluntary safety recall on vehicles equipped with an unprotected Relay.
  • May 17th, 2021 – FCA US became aware of a vehicle fire in a vehicle with a protected Relay.
  • May 2021 to September 2021 – FCA US became aware of seven additional fires in vehicles with a protected Relay.
  • October 8th, 2021 – FCA US identified seven customer assistance records, one warranty claim, and seven
    field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from August 5th, 2020 to October 8th, 2021.
  • October 8th, 2021 – As of this date, FCA US is aware of zero accidents and zero injuries potentially related to this issue for all markets.
  • October 8th, 2021 – FCA US determined, through the VRC, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
2021 Ram 2500 Limited Longhorn Mega Cab 4×4. (Ram).

Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy has been performed. The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Friday, December 3rd, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Y76.
