Twin-Turbo Hurricane Engines – MPGs, Power, & Towing Numbers!

Yesterday, we learned a lot more about the all-new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter (Hurricane) inline-six-cylinder engine, thanks to the Jeep® press conference at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). The new lineup of engines is set to make their first appearance under the hood of the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (WS) in the upcoming weeks. It will later be available on the standard-wheelbase models as an option, and the new “L” variants as standard equipment.

Efficiency – 

While the engine isn’t replacing the HEMI options in the standard-wheelbase completely, Stellantis is using the new Hurricane engines to help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The new Hurricane lineup delivers more horsepower, more torque, and fewer emissions than the HEMI engines already in the lineup. When compared to the HEMI offerings already in the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer, the Hurricane engines can be up to 15% more efficient than larger engines.

Jeep states that both variants of the Hurricane engines return an estimated 1 to 2 MPG combined-rating improvement compared to the existing HEMI engines. Below are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy ratings for the standard-wheelbase Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer and their “L” variants…

Availability & Power – 

According to Jeep, the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter (Hurricane) inline-six-cylinder high-output (H.O.) engine or what they call the “Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510” will deliver 510 horsepower (375 kW) and 500 lb.-ft. (678 N•m) of torque in the Grand Wagoneer. While the new Grand Wagoneer L will come with the Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510 as standard equipment, the motor will be an option on the standard-wheelbase model as well. The Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP) will start production on the standard-wheelbase model in the upcoming weeks and it will be offered as a 2022 model.

Jeep accidentally leaked the $2,000 upcharge for the Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510 last month on Jeep.com. The automaker has yet to confirm if that will be the actual price when offered.

It appears that the HEMI offerings will stay as the standard powertrains for now on the standard-wheelbase Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. However, those standard-wheelbase models will be offered with Hurricane alternatives as we mentioned above. The Wagoneer will be available with the Hurricane S.O. motor in 2023. When released, that engine will provide the Wagoneer with 420 horsepower (313 kW) and 468 lb.-ft. (635 N•m) of torque.

Both Hurricane engines will be mated to a ZF-sourced 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission. With five clutches and four planetary gear set architecture, the 8HP75 features a 7.03 overall ratio spread. It features Engine Stop/Start and electronic range select capability, as well as, an electronically modulated torque converter clutch with a torsional turbine damper.

Towing – 

One more amazing note is that the added power from the Hurricane engines allows the “L” variants to feature best-in-class towing capabilities (just like their standard-wheelbase counterparts). 

Front independent double-wishbone suspension components combine lightweight composite upper control arms, aluminum lower control arms, and geometry tuned for responsiveness and handling. The front stabilizer bar sits behind the front tires, further enhancing roll stiffness. Rear independent multi-link, the coil-spring suspension provides a superior on-road ride, bolsters handling, and provides better articulation over obstacles.

Wagoneer L comes standard with a coil spring suspension, while an air suspension system with electronically controlled semi-active damping — available on Wagoneer L, standard on Grand Wagoneer L — further enhances ride quality. The air suspension features a closed-loop system that recycles clean air resulting in improved compressor durability. This air suspension system continuously adjusts stiffness to loading conditions to optimize ride performance. An external valve block and secondary air reservoir allow for both axles to lower simultaneously. Electronically controlled semi-active damped shocks on air suspension vehicles continuously adjust to road conditions and driving styles.

While the Hurricane engines are kind of disappointing in the MPG department, horsepower and torque, and towing numbers are impressive. It will be interesting when we can get our hands on one and see how well these new inline-six-cylinder engines can do against their HEMI V8 counterparts. Only time will tell.
