DS’ E-Tense Performance Concept Points To A Future Of Cars Without Conventional Brakes!

Using Electric Motors To Slow You Down...

Driven by the spirit of innovation and backed by the heritage of the iconic 1955 Citroën DS, the DS brand was born in 2014 as the embodiment of French luxury in the automotive industry. Since 2019, DS had made the move to electrification a priority… well before Stellantis’ current brands announced their intentions to the movement.

With innovation being a crucial piece of the brand’s existence, DS showed off its E-Tense Performance Concept earlier this year. The E-Tense Performance Concept showcases innovative new ideas for the future of the electric car. One of those features is the use of electric motor regeneration instead of conventional brakes, a potential direction forward in the field of electric vehicles. Using technology from the brand’s Formula E race car program, which uses two onboard electric motors to slow the vehicle entirely through regenerative braking, up to 600 kW.

Though regenerative braking is already available in most electric vehicles, the technology is currently used to complement conventional friction brakes, however, DS is exploring whether regenerative braking alone could eventually be the sole method to slow cars down, helping to better recharge the battery in the process, and doing away with conventional brake discs and pads. The intelligent technology renders the conventional Formula E braking system fitted to the E-Tense Performance Concept completely redundant.

The E-Tense Performance Concept has been developed in conjunction with the brand’s championship-winning Formula E team and uses the same electric motors that can be found in the electric race cars. With 815 horsepower on tap and a massive 8,000 Nm (5,900 ft.-lbs.) of torque, the E-Tense Performance Concept can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in about 2 seconds. Using 350kW charging, a full charge can be completed in just 5 minutes.

“Formula E is about maximizing performance and efficiency, and the E-Tense Performance Concept is our vision of a road car utilizing our race-winning technology,“ said DS Automobiles CEO, Beatrice Foucher. “Regenerative braking is a very powerful way to not only slow the vehicle down but also help improve battery performance. The E-Tense Performance Concept takes the technology to a new level, with regenerative braking used solely to slow the vehicle down.”
