Thieves Try To Steal Two Durangos In Failed Attempt At Stellantis Factory!

Plants Still A Major Focus For Auto Theft...

Thieves continue to take aim at Stellantis holding lots across the Metro Detroit area. It’s a common problem that the automaker has been battling for several years now at several of its key manufacturing facilities around the area.

In their latest ploy to steal two new HEMI-powered Dodge Durangos from the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson (formerly called Jefferson North Assembly Plant or “JNAP”) facility, two thieves ran into issues literally as they tried to drive two Durango’s down a grassy embankment and through a security fence at the corner of Conner Avenue and Charlevoix Street on Detroit’s east side.

What they didn’t expect was that heavy-duty metal cable would stop them from getting away with the vehicles. The first vehicle a White Knuckle Dodge Durango R/T was instantly entangled in the heavy cable bringing the vehicle to a complete stop. The other vehicle which appears to be a Dodge Durango R/T HEMI Orange edition also received damage during the failed attempt.

Even though the early morning attempt failed, the suspects still got away. This latest incident is just one of a number of thefts that have happened on Stellantis lots this year.

In August, Detroit Police arrested three minors, aged 11, 12, and 14, on the Jefferson lot, trying to steal several new Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcat models on a holding lot.

In October 2018, two juveniles aged 14 and 15 at the time, were caught trying to steal more vehicles from the same lot. Both teenagers were charged as juveniles with seven counts of larceny over $20,000, one count of resisting arrest, and malicious destruction of property.

Detroit Police Commercial Auto Theft Unit is currently working with Stellantis on thefts around the area. The Auto Theft Unit is wondering if the kids were working for adults as part of a theft ring, believing that the kids wouldn’t suffer the harsh punishments an adult would.
