Stellantis Pauses Fiat 500e Production for December

Production Suspension Highlights Challenges in EV Market...

Stellantis will halt production of the all-electric Fiat 500e at its historic Mirafiori Assembly Plant in Turin, Italy, throughout December. This decision reflects ongoing struggles in the electric vehicle (EV) market, where demand remains sluggish in key regions.

The Mirafiori facility will close its assembly lines from December 2nd to December 17th, adding to a pre-planned year-end holiday shutdown from December 18th to January 5th, 2024. This announcement follows several production interruptions earlier in the year due to weak EV sales.

Demand Challenges Across Markets –

The Fiat 500e primarily serves European markets and accounts for 97% of the plant’s production. Stellantis cited “continuing uncertainty in sales of electric cars in several European markets” as a significant factor. Additionally, low demand for premium vehicles in countries like China and the U.S. further contributed to the slowdown.

The Fiat 500e debuted in the North American market earlier this year but has struggled to gain traction in the U.S. due to its subcompact size and limited appeal. With a starting price of $32,500, the two-door city car offers a modest electric range of just 162 miles for city driving, which has been a hurdle for some consumers. In response, Stellantis introduced special financing offers, including a 2.9% APR for 60 months and $500 Holiday Bonus Cash, available through January 2nd, 2025, to incentivize buyers.

While EV adoption continues to grow globally, the pace of consumer interest in small electric city cars has not met expectations. Stellantis noted that hybrid vehicles are gaining more traction, prompting a strategic pivot.

A Push Toward Hybrid Technology –

Stellantis is investing $110 million to update the Fiat 500 with a hybrid powertrain to meet consumer preferences. The hybrid version will complement the all-electric Fiat 500e and could help stabilize production and sales in the future.

Located in Turin, the Mirafiori plant is one of the most iconic facilities in Fiat’s history. In addition to the Fiat 500e, the plant manufactures low-volume Maserati sports cars. With the change in leadership there should emerge three basic iron clad commitments for recovery. First, vast improvement in build quality to restore public confidence. Second, redirect finances to build pending product, especially gas powered vehicles, as soon as possible. Third, offer engine options in every brand to include ICE, hybrid and electrification when and only when fully perfected. These must be fundamental from tomorrow forward.
Poor Fiat 500, it is baring the brunt of a consumer market rejecting all electric without options in many beloved brands and models. Get these three fundamentals right and things may get better, even for the legendary Fiat 500.

They were still running the last-gen 500 Hybrid then...
