Stellantis Files Patent for Innovative Launch Control System Interface

Simplifying Launches for High-Performance Vehicles...

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) has been granted a patent for an innovative launch control system designed to improve high-performance vehicle launches, particularly in racing and drag racing environments. The new technology, revealed through a patent filing on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website, promises to simplify and optimize the vehicle launch process, enhancing performance and user experience.

The Problem with Traditional Launch Control Systems –

High-performance vehicles often utilize launch control systems to ensure a smooth and powerful start, preventing wheel slip and maximizing traction. However, traditional systems often require drivers to manage multiple tasks, including pedal modulation, activating launch mode, and adjusting settings manually during the launch phase. This can be overwhelming, particularly in high-stress situations like drag racing, where split-second decisions are crucial for success.

Stellantis’ newly patented system addresses these challenges by offering a more intuitive and automated approach to launch control. We touched on some of these features in our exclusive look at the all-new 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona’s new interface.

Features of the New Launch Control System –

This launch control system is designed to make the vehicle launch process smoother, faster, and more consistent. Key features include:

  • Maximum Available Torque Curve: The system determines and displays the maximum available torque for the vehicle’s powertrain, allowing drivers to easily see how much power is available under current conditions.
  • Desired Launch Speed: Drivers can set their preferred launch speed, with the system adjusting torque delivery to ensure a smooth and effective launch.
  • Dynamic Torque Curve Adjustment: As the driver adjusts the desired launch speed, the system automatically recalculates the torque curve to optimize power delivery.
  • Shift Recovery Curves: Drivers can choose predefined recovery curves that dictate how the engine speed recovers after a gear shift, ensuring smooth transitions during acceleration.
  • Trans Brake Feature: The system holds the vehicle stationary while increasing the powertrain speed to the set launch speed, optimizing the launch for maximum efficiency.

With these features, the system allows the driver to focus solely on pressing the accelerator pedal while the technology manages the torque curve, reducing the risk of launch errors.

A User-Friendly Interface for Performance Drivers –

Stellantis’ patent also envisions a driver interface that is easy to navigate and intuitive to use. Likely integrated into the vehicle’s infotainment system, the interface provides clear, real-time feedback on torque curves, launch speeds, and other important parameters. This helps drivers make informed decisions without being overwhelmed by complex settings.

The system can automatically adjust to provide optimal powertrain performance, all while allowing the driver to focus on maintaining control and executing the launch with precision.

Revolutionizing Vehicle Launches –

The new launch control system represents a significant advancement in automotive performance technology. It aims to eliminate the complexities associated with traditional systems. By streamlining the launch process, Stellantis ensures that high-performance vehicles can deliver their maximum potential with minimal effort from the driver.
