SPOTTED: Jeep® Recon Moab Testing with Power-Opening Roof

New Images Showcase Jeep® Newest EV Testing

The highly anticipated all-electric Jeep® Recon (EJ) Moab 4xe has been spotted testing once again, this time showing off its power-opening roof in what appears to be near-production form. Jeep is pushing forward with the development of this adventure-ready SUV, and the latest images confirm that it retains the brand’s signature open-air experience.

Open-Air Capability in an EV –

One of the standout features of the Jeep Recon is its power-retractable roof, allowing drivers and passengers to enjoy an open-air experience at the push of a button. This is a major highlight for Jeep enthusiasts who appreciate the Wrangler’s removable roof and doors. Unlike the Wrangler, however, the Recon is built on the unibody STLA Large platform, which is expected to enhance on-road comfort while still delivering off-road capability.

New Spy Photos Reveal Production Details –

Recent images of the Recon Moab prototype reveal several key details that indicate Jeep is moving closer to production. The test vehicle retains its rugged design, with vinyl camouflage covering the backlit seven-slot grille and D-pillar, which will eventually feature Recon branding. The iconic Jeep badging is also absent, a common practice for pre-production models.

One significant change from earlier prototypes is the switch from Blue 4xe tow hooks to Red ones, aligning with the styling cues seen on the Wrangler Rubicon and Trailhawk models. This adjustment was first teased in Jeep’s Super Bowl commercial and now appears to be a finalized design choice for the Moab trim.

Serious Off-Road Equipment –

The Moab trim, positioned as the most off-road-capable Recon variant, is expected to feature enhanced ground clearance, 17-inch wheels wrapped in Nexen Roadian ATX all-terrain tires, and full underbody armor for trail protection. This package reinforces Jeep’s commitment to ensuring the Recon can tackle demanding terrains despite its electric powertrain.

Performance and Powertrain –

Built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, the Recon will be the first true off-roader to utilize this architecture. It is expected to feature a 400-volt dual electric drive module (EDM) setup delivering between 450 and 600 horsepower, ensuring strong performance both on and off the road. Standard four-wheel drive (4×4) will be included obviously, staying true to Jeep’s heritage.

Potential Hybrid Variant in the Future? –

Stellantis North America COO Antonio Filosa has hinted at a potential hybrid variant of the Recon, addressing skepticism toward EVs in certain markets. “[While] being faithful to our main strategy of deep electrification, we can think about opportunities on Recon. Let’s see: Recon will be built on a platform that is very versatile,” Filosa said. He clarified further, stating, “We are just studying [development on the Recon] and just analyzing if there are options for the future — but so far it’s BEV.”

If approved, this model could arrive in 2026 with a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four engine paired with electrification, catering to markets where EV adoption has been slower.

Global Rollout on the Horizon –

The Jeep Recon is expected to make its way into North American dealerships later this year, with a global rollout planned soon after. Key markets include Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, where Jeep has a strong reputation for rugged reliability.

With production already underway at Stellantis’ Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico, Jeep is in full swing preparing for the Recon’s official launch. As testing continues, enthusiasts eagerly await more details on this exciting addition to Jeep’s electric lineup.
