The next evolution of the Jeep® Wagoneer (WS) is underway, and it’s going electric — with a twist. Recently, our spy photographer’s lenses caught a camouflaged 2027 Wagoneer 4xe engineering mule out and about near the Chelsea Proving Grounds in Michigan, giving us our first real-world look at Jeep’s upcoming Range-Extending Electric Vehicle (REEV).

This isn’t your average electric vehicle (EV). Like the all-new Ram 1500 Ramcharger, the Wagoneer 4xe is expected to pair a dual electric drive module (EDM) system with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine acting purely as a generator. That means the gas engine won’t drive the wheels — the electric motors will do all the heavy lifting. The V6 simply kicks in to charge the battery when needed, giving drivers all the benefits of an EV without the fear of running out of juice.

The engineering mule spotted testing was packed with new hardware and styling tweaks. Up front, it wore fresh headlights that resemble those found on the upcoming all-electric Wagoneer S. With no front fascia, it’s hard to tell what the final design will look like. However, our sources have indicated that it will wear a proper Jeep badge instead of the block-letter WAGONEER branding, signaling a return of the nameplate to the core Jeep family. On the roof sat a Thule carrier, likely for equipment monitoring performance during testing.

According to our sources, visually, the updated Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will receive changes to the front and rear fascias. The new styling cues are expected to take inspiration from the Wagoneer S, bringing a modernized look to the lineup, including those new striker accents on each side of the lower front fascia.

Jeep is also simplifying its lineup. When the refreshed Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer arrive for 2026, trim levels will switch from Series I, II, and III to names like Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer, Limited, and Summit. A larger Uconnect 5 system with more advanced screens is also expected, keeping things fresh inside.

Powertrain details haven’t been officially confirmed, but if Jeep follows Ram’s playbook, we can expect serious capability. The Ramcharger’s REEV setup delivers a whopping 663 horsepower and up to 690 miles of targeted range. While the Wagoneer will probably tone that down a bit for SUV duty, it’s still expected to bring big power and extended range that rivals any full-size SUV out there. Expect strong towing capability, too — Jeep isn’t about to sacrifice utility for electrification.

Under the skin, this new 4xe variant will ride on a modified version of the Wagoneer’s current body-on-frame platform. It should continue using the high-strength STLA Frame architecture, but with upgrades to accommodate the battery pack and electric drive system. One of those upgrades is that the frame is 8 inches wider to accommodate the new battery pack in the center section. Independent rear suspension and air suspension will remain for a smoother ride and off-road capability, which is clearly shown in these latest photos.

Jeep’s choice to go with a REEV system is a smart one. It keeps the brand in the EV game while offering something practical for customers who need range and capability in remote areas — places where charging stations are few and far between. Plus, there’s no range anxiety, even when towing or off-roading.

The 2027 Wagoneer 4xe is still deep in development, but things are moving fast. We expect it to hit dealerships by late 2026 as a 2027 model, bringing with it a whole new era of electrified Jeep luxury and capability.
