SPOTTED: 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Ti Q4 PHEV Out On The Street!
More Fine-Tuning The New Plug-In Italian C-Segment UV...
In what has to be one of the worst camouflage jobs we have seen on a test vehicle, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Q4 PHEV plug-in hybrid has been caught again testing on the streets of Europe. One would think that the patch of camouflage over the driver-side charging port would draw more attention to the vehicle, and definitely allowed Walter Vayr of GabetzSPYUnit. to grab some even better shots of the new electrified Alfa.
Currently, the Tonale has been on sale in Europe with two engine choices. There is the new turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four-cylinder gasoline mild-hybrid (mHEV) engine, first shown on the Jeep® Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid models. The new engine is part of the Stellantis Global Small Engine (GSE) or “FireFly” family, depending on where you are located. The second choice is the new 1.6-liter inline-four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that pairs a 6-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. The combination is good for 130 horsepower and 236 ft.-lbs. (320 Nm) of torque.
Both engines have only been offered on front-wheel-drive models. But if you want Q4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability in Europe, you will have to step up to the plug-in hybrid electric model.
The Tonale’s Q4 PHEV powertrain integrates two electric motors and a 15.5-kWh battery pack (4.1-kWh bigger than the Jeep Renegade and Compass 4xe), with a fuel-efficient 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. This architecture provides two cars in one – a battery-electric vehicle featuring an electric motor and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack on the rear axle and a conventional vehicle with an internal combustion engine (ICE) fitted on the front axle, creating AWD.
The Q4 system delivers a total output of 275 horsepower and makes the Q4 PHEV system the sportiest offering in its class-leading 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) acceleration in just 6.2 seconds. The Q4 PHEV system allows the Tonale to have an all-electric range of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) in the city cycle and 37.2 miles (60 kilometers) when city and highway are combined.
A full-battery charge for the Tonale Q4 takes 2.5 hours when using the 7.4-kW fast charger.
The PHEV powertrain will also make its debut in the North American market in 2023, as well. There it will be offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter GME-T4 inline-four-cylinder that is also paired with AWD.
This particular vehicle shot is a Ti-trimmed model. The Ti trim is the mid-range model that should be one of the more popular models in the lineup. Unlike the earlier Ti Q4 PHEV tester, we say with 18-inch wheels, this one wears 19-inch diamond aluminum wheels with Gloss Black pockets.
