RECALL: Ram Issues Recall For 68,809 Pickups For Trailer Reverse Steering Control Module

Rearview Screens Fail To Display...

Stellantis, previously known as FCA US, LLC, is issuing a recall for 68,809 units of their Ram 1500 (DT) pickup trucks manufactured from 2021 to 2023, as well as their 2023 Ram 2500 (DJ) pickups.

The reason for the recall is that the Trailer Reverse Steering Control Module (TRSCM) installed in these vehicles may cause the rearview image to fail to display when the vehicle is put in reverse. As a result, these vehicles do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which pertains to Rear Visibility.

The recall notice states that the potentially affected group of Ram 1500 vehicles began on June 3rd, 2020, with the production of the first suspected 2021 model year vehicle, and ended on August 17th, 2022. Meanwhile, the Ram 2500’s potentially affected population started on June 21st, 2022, with the manufacture of the first 2023 models, and ended on August 17th, 2022. Out of the total number of vehicles involved in the recall, 68,784 are Ram 1500s, while only 25 units are Ram 2500s.

Recall Chronology:

  • On September 1st, 2022, FCA US, LLC. (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened an investigation into 2021 to 2023 Ram 1500 and 2023 Ram 2500 vehicles for the rearview camera being inoperative.
  • From September 2022, through January 2023, FCA US TSRC reviewed vehicle records and met with FCA US engineering to review supplier data to understand the condition.
  • On January 18th, 2023, FCA US TSRC recognized that the TRSCM may fail internally resulting in the rearview camera image not displaying during a backing event under certain circumstances, potentially not in compliance with FMVSS No. 111.
  • On February 2nd, 2023, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Dealers will update the TRSCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on March 31st, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is 14A.

FCA US has a well-established policy and habit of compensating vehicle owners for the expenses incurred in repairing a problem that is later identified as the subject of field action. In order to maintain consistency in this process, FCA US will include a request in the owner letter, asking customers to submit the original receipt and/or other satisfactory evidence of payment to the company to verify the expenses.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
